Are You For or Against the Escalation: No Escaping This Vote in the House
Cross-posted at DailyKos.com
The House this week is considering a resolution opposing the President's plan to escalate the conflict in Iraq.
This resolution reflects the will of the American people. Americans said at the polls last November that they wanted this war to end and for our troops to be withdrawn from the civil war that rages in Iraq.
Now that the President has submitted his budget and the House has begun work on the funding resolutions for fiscal year 2008, Democrats have turned their attention to stopping the president's push for more war. This week's resolution marks the first step in that process.
For the past several weeks, many Senate Republicans publicly criticized the President's escalation proposal. Astonishingly, they then blocked efforts to allow a vote on the Bush Iraq policy. Even Senator John Warner, the Republican author of the Iraq resolution, voted against bringing his own bill to a vote. Warner cited the need to stand with his party's leadership and the President.
Do these guys ever learn? The American people punished Republicans in November for failing to challenge the president on the war. Does the GOP expect the American public will accept parliamentary maneuvers and evasiveness as a substitute for leadership on this issue?
Speaker Pelosi is going to devote three days of House debate to allow every Member of Congress to state their position on the president's troop escalation plan. Thankfully, the rules of the House are different than the Senate and will not allow Representatives to similarly criticize the expansion of the war and then cowardly avoid voting on the issue.
Recent revelations and reports will provide plenty for Members of Congress to discuss this week. The revelations of the DoD IG report on the manipulation of intelligence, for example, as well as the most recent National Intelligence Estimate.
Referencing this NIE, former Reagan NSA Director Lt. Gen. William Odom stated yesterday that "victory is not an option":
The new National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq starkly delineates the gulf that separates President Bush's illusions from the realities of the war. Victory, as the president sees it, requires a stable liberal democracy in Iraq that is pro-American. The NIE describes a war that has no chance of producing that result. In this critical respect, the NIE, the consensus judgment of all the U.S. intelligence agencies, is a declaration of defeat.
For this week's resolution, I expect plenty of Republicans will hide behind complaints of process. That's what they always do when they are afraid to talk about the substance of an issue.
The truth is that House Republican leaders want to distort and distract, and wrap themselves in the courage of our men and women in uniform (the same men and women in uniform they have repeatedly declined to take care of in so many ways). We are not going to let these games be played. You are either for this escalation, or against it. Every member of the House will get the chance to stand up and be counted this week.

I'm not great at math, but...
It's my understanding that each member of the House will have 5 minutes to voice their opinion on the resolution.
435 members x 5 minutes = 2175 minutes = 36.75 hours (not counting the procedures time)
By the most conservative estimates, there have been approximately 60,000 civilian deaths in Iraq; 23,417 wounded americans, and 3126 american deaths since the invasion began around 1447 days ago.
Here's where I apologize for not being great at math, but...if I have it figured right:
By the time the House is finished discussing the resolution, 62 more Iraqi civilians will be dead, 24 more americans will be wounded, and 3 more americans will be dead.
And, that's based on conservative estimates. The Iraqi civilian deaths would be double or even triple that figure, by some estimates.
My "will" as an american is for the killing to stop. Right now. Not later.
Shameful that A Debate is Necessary
The people have spoken and their representatives should just "do it"--stop the madness of GWB, quit funding the war & bring the troops home. The Congressmembers who support endless war and multiple deployments for the same troops can do so because they & their families don't personally have to go to Iraq--but if there were true justice, those that vote to keep supporting Bush should have to go over there as members of the military and serve 12 month repeated tours themselves.
Shameful indeed
Who will support this nonsensical resolution? Some will, some won,t - So What!
Fool Us Twice? From Iraq to Iran
Please, Congressman, do something worthwhile and binding.
Congressman...
I'll keep this simple and clear...
OUT OF IRAQ...NOW!
NO MORE BLOOD FOR OIL!
I echo what Starcomed07 said in the last thread.
The debate should NOT(!) be about the continuation with or without the escalation. To even entertain such a debate means you support keeping our troops in harms way, albeit a smaller number, in favor of the Felony that took them there and continues to kill them there in Iraq.
A CBS News Poll out Monday:
Implied consent is at play here. Make the President use the Food and Forage Act of 1861 to fund his war by stealing from the people, keeping in mind that the majority of Americans are not affected by this occupation. Maybe the President pinching from Medicaid or Welfare or Education will rile the masses to throw the thief out. After all, it's only the Veterans that he's currently pinching from.

AMERICA NEEDS A COURSE CORRECTION IN INTERNATIONAL AND ECONOMIC POLICY -(House of Representatives - February 13, 2007)
Mr. Kucinich Speaks on the record
A non-binding resolution is one thing. More important is whether the democrats will use the power of the purse to bring an orderly, yet expeditious, end to this illegal war in Iraq - and prevent BushCo's "accidental war of aggression" against Iran.
And someone should say something like - - -
"We have intended to work with this Administration, with our friends on the other side of the aisle, in the desire to attend to the Nation's Business; we have studiously avoided anything that might look like we were taking revenge on our Republican friends for the shameful way we were treated when THEY held the reins of power. We have tried to be nice. We have even eschewed the idea of impeaching the people who lied to get us into the mess we are in, and propose to make the mess even worse with this escalation and probable enlargement of the debacle, even threatening to get us into World War III with another series of cold-blooded errors! What has been our reward? The other body cravenly will not even debate a non-binding resolution brought by a Republican; they mistakenly say that this President needs support at this critical time. The American people want us OUT of Iraq; the American people are beginning to demand that the people who lied to start this war, and are continuing to lie to enlarge it be punished for their misdeeds. The Congress is supposed to be REPRESENTING the American People! Do we fulfill our Constitutional duty, or do we hide like a pack of cowards behind our flag and say, in weaseling fashion that "The troops need our support?" I say yes! The troops DO need our support! The best way we can support the brave men and women who have been lied into a losing - and faulty - cause, is - BRING THEM HOME! Not only do I reject the idea of the criminal escalation of this unjust and unnecessary - and disastrously costly - war, I demand that it END, and that the perpetrators who cynically lied to get us into it be appropriately punished for their actions. If that requires that impeachment be put back on the Speaker's table, so be it."
Lt General Odom is correct
Referencing this NIE, former Reagan NSA Director Lt. Gen. William Odom stated yesterday that "victory is not an option":
As I have said before, the sooner politicians and Americans come to grips with the fact that there is no "winning" in Iraq, the sooner the troops will come home. Setting aside the the fact that these objectives were illegal, immoral and unethical, victory as defined by the stated neocon objectives is accomplished.
Mission Accomplished. It's Time to call ENDEX to military operations in Iraq.
Look, realisticly...
The fact is Saddam is dead. We hung him. Regardless of the reason we went in, we grabbed the boss and killed him. There is no argueing who won.
The argument is about conquest.
The president defines success by the terms "...Stable, self governing, an ally in the war on Terra..."
Now why would Iraq want to be that, for Us, after the hell we have put them thru? Anyone care to field that one?
Now, as to why the Pres would want that...it is because, on the one hand, it is a labor of Sisiphus. It will never get done, and till it does he is a war president, with all the adolesent chest beating imagry you could possibly think of. On the other hand, IF IT DOES GET DONE (HA!) then things are going very well indeed. No one conquers the World using his own soldiers, nor has any ever tried. Because it simply cannot be done. Unless you are Chinese. No, the way the World gets conquered is, by the use of soldiers captured from other Machiavelli type guys.
Guys like Saddam.
Refs : Hitler, Napoleon, Gengis Khan (Hi GK!), Rome, Alexander, Xerxes, Darius, and so on. All of 'em did it using other peoples soldiers. Lets not overlook that all of 'em lost, too.
Here is an idea, How 'bout we declare Victory and go home? Like Reed says. I bet that would be real popular.

Off topic : Shaped Charge / Explosively Formed Projectile
I was briefly confused by the use of the new terminology. Upon review, I find the word new, the idea old, as is often the case when dealing with propaganda. It turns out, the "new" weapons said to be provided by Iran are actually not new Iranian weapons, but rather old Irish weapons. I say Irish? I meant British. Turns out, the British gave them to the Irish, to use againt the British as part of an allegedly botched sting scam. It is also worth noting, this is not the first time this particular piece of propaganda has been used, as this story was published October 2005.
The key differance tween shaped charge and explosively formed penetrator weapons is distance from the target the weapon can be while remaining effective. Other than that, the differance is, the EFP is a shaped charge with an extra, or a differantly shaped, piece. That piece is used as a projectile, while the shaped charge is used as a gun to hurl that projectile. The EFP weapon is basicly the shaped charge weapon on steroids.
Note that the photo I used above is of a HOMEMADE Weapon. It is a piece of pipe cut on a horizonal bandsaw, with the penetrator fastened in place with a couple sloppy welds. There is no great skill required to make this. Making the infrared trigger does require some skill. Not much more than shown here, but some. Solder as crappy as those welds might not work.
I could make one of these for between thirty and fourty dollars. That includes the trigger.
Frosted Flake
Next topic : North Korea. If I understand correctly, One Million tons of oil. That would be 8 Million Barrels. That works out to a half billion dollars...Seems like an awful lot of money, till you think of one Nuke going off somewhere inconvienient, and of course the war that would cause.
On Topic I am watching, hoping to learn. It may not seem so, but I do this a lot.
Haven't we been there, done this before?
Many a sting/scam abound.

It seems the Anti U.S. Democratic Party, P.M. of Australia, rather enjoys following the Neoconservatives, both in rhetoric and old fashioned foreign policy; Arms and drugs.
The U.S. Congress, specifically the Democratic Party, could stand to learn from the Austrailian Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd on facing the rhetoric back down.
Been there, done this?

Frosty, you and Reed should get together and open
up the "best" investigative committee ever formed. You guys are unbelievable in your research and scientific knowledge. You, Koryannder, Wallen, et al. enlighten us in ways that we would never become enlightened were it not for you. Kudos to you all and thank you for "shining" REAL light on obtuse (or obstrusive) situations. (Remember that word, Reed?)
Word of the day: obstruse
Abstruse
Pronunciation: &b-'strüs, ab-
Function: adjective
1: difficult to comprehend : RECONDITE
Obtuse
Pronunciation: äb-'tüs, &b-, -'tyüs
Function: adjective
1 a : not pointed or acute : BLUNT -- see TRIANGLE illustration
1 b (1) of an angle : exceeding 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees (2) : having an obtuse angle
1 c of a leaf : rounded at the free end
2 a : lacking sharpness or quickness of sensibility or intellect : INSENSITIVE, STUPID
2b : difficult to comprehend : not clear or precise in thought or expression
Frosted Flake and Reed tell jokes that are both obtuse and abstruse. Would that make their humor obtruse?
Example: FF, not that anyone really cares, but would you consider a Lumberjack to be a boxers or a brief kind of guy?
Well, it's late, Reedasty -- you knew what I meant!
I'm saving selected words, right now! So, I made a spelling error -- so what? I don't think Frosty's choice of undergarments is important here. I will get you for this one, Reedolo!

Of course I know what you meant Tahoe, the fleet of foot and quick of mind. They say that courage can come from the most unexpected sectors. I don't think anyone can ever doubt your courage and strength!
As for obstruse abuse, I was being silly again, trying to remember those earlier days when worms were golden and Elsie the Cow would plug for Borden. Because after all, we all laugh so infrequently these days. It's udderly ridiculous.
Well, it's udderly difficult to agree with you, Reedy,
but I do. Yes, we've been abandoned by "pumping cows," "Barkus," even "the Plug." Those days when we still had some humor in us, and laughed a little. Sad! Sad! Sad!
Respect is dwindling
The House of Representatives will spend the next three days debating whether they should pass a non-binding resolution regarding BushCo,s Iraq policy and his plan to escalate troops and military assets in the Middle East.

Wow - this ought to really scare and deter Bush/Cheney and Company. NOT!
White House Press Briefing 2-12-07
What impact will the House members, words, debate or resolution have? The American people will not be distracted by your non binding resolution.
Talk is Cheap! Americans die while Congress engages in worthless debates.
Talk is Cheap! Iraqis die while Congress engages in worthless debates.
Talk is Cheap! BushCo laughs while Congress engages in worthless debates.
IMO - if Congress approves supplemental and/or continued funding for the war in Iraq, the House members will without a doubt be complicit in supporting and prosecuting this illegal and immoral war.

JC, Just caught most of your floor speech
Thank You. You made me so proud with your statement. I'm so glad you are willing to use the power of the purse to try and reign in this war now.
We still need to get the garbage out of the White House and VP residence. We need some new tennants that won't trash the place.
Hi, Alma, is there a link to the Congressman's statement?
I hope members of the House are sincere about using the power of the purse.
Right now, I'm disheartened about Congressman Conyers posting that this non-binding resolution is the will of americans. I think that polls indicate that a do-nothing piece of legislation is not the will of americans, but rather getting out of Iraq now and immediate defunding is the will of americans; that position is supported overwhelmingly in the responses here and on Kos. (Quite a few requests for immediate impeachment of Cheney, as well.)
I would very much like some clarity on the Congressman's position. I'll try looking online today for links, too.
Thanks you!
Listening to C-SPAN now
Unfortunately, I've missed several statements, but hopefully they will all be available on the Congressional Record
Pence made some assumptions about "quitting" and "losing", to which I reply this:
When members of Congress QUIT following the Constitution, everyone LOSES.
If anyone else is watching/listening, I'd love to hear your insights on this hearing.
I've been listening to the debate on C-Span
but after hearing what the first few RePugs had to say, it was pointless to listen to any more of their babbling, so I only listened to Democrats.
To kick things off for the RePugs, Boehner puked Kool Aid all over the microphone, then spewed the sound bite BushCo told him to spew, "This battle is the most visible part of a global war. If we leave, they will follow us home. It's that simple."
Yes. The Iraqi insurgents are going to follow us home if we leave Iraq, just like the Viet Cong followed us home after we left Vietnam. I remember them taking over my home town and renaming it Ho Chi Minh City, Minnesota. They were everywhere. They drove up and down Main Street on their bicycles converting everyone to communism, dated all the best looking girls, and made us all wear black pajamas and stupid looking hats.
It was hell.
It Could Be Said...
That the reality of the far right exists in a liberal fantasy land. NO?
Rusty, I love your manner of putting things in perspective.
In the case of the Iraqis, I think that they might be quite GLAD to see us leave and stop meddling in their "domestic" affairs -- who knows, they may even get it together. You know, work, income, etc. helps a lot. We certainly have not done anything "constructive" by our presence there -- and, frankly, we incited the whole mess. (Understatement of the last four years.)
As to Iran, however, that may well be a different case, I think we would, by our actions, be "inviting" them to follow us home.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rusty
Your humor is therapeutic.
I also found it difficult to sit through the Republican statements; the "our way of life is treatened" mantra is droll, it ran its course during the "red scare". This administration has damaged so many lives. I find this "symbolic" resolution difficult to get through.
The consequences of the occupation is real; I hope Congress comes up with some real legislation to deal with it soon.
Hi feline
I hope the millions of Americans who voted for RePugs the last few elections were hanging their heads in shame as they listened to the unspeakable idiots they chose to represent them in Congress.
While Democrats talked about the consequences of Bush's catastrophic war and explained the necessity of withdrawing from Iraq and redeploying to fight al Qaeda, RePugs talked about the Barbary Pirates, Davy Crockett, and some guy from Idaho who got shot down over Hanoi forty years ago.
As frustrating as this non-binding resolution is, these 3 days of debate will expose these RePug morons, one after the other, for all of America to see. The Republic Party is morally bankrupt, their politicians are embarrassing spectacles. JC has a point, they cannot hide behind Rovian sound bites any longer, they cannot smear their way out their war, they are trapped.
By the time this debate ends, BushCo will be in a much deeper hole than they were in before it started.
Get your Impeachment shovels out, Democrats, and bury George and Dick in that hole.
Abstract! My ass!!!
Dick : Hello Georgy
George : hello Dickey. how have you been doing
Dick : Fine, but we need to do something about the Manamals.
George : what,s that Dickey
Dick : well you know, I told you about what they been trien to do.
George : yeh That Conyers held that meetin and brought all those signatures to the white house.
I bet those manamals thought I would be impressed.
Both : HA HA HA
George : Ever since we stold the first election , those pesky manamals have been pissin me off. I started that rigamarole in Iraq to get them off my back, seems like it made them madder.Guess I,ll have to get their asses into a bigger mess to shut em up. I , being the commander in chief am going to really kick their asses this time.
I,m going to raid Iran an blow up a few hundred thousand manamals at one time, Just like that other dude did in WW2.I,ll use a nuke too . that should shut them up. Nothing like brute force to quite things down for a while!
Dick : I think you have a decent plan there Georgy , if you wipe out a few million manamals , we could have more "Elbow Room" ,Gee I think I heard that before. Damn manamals are nothing but stupid idiots anyway. As a matter of fact why don't we just round them up and ,yeh ,what could we do with them? Those that we tortured in the internment camps were a lot of fun. Reminded me a lot of when I was little ,I used to love hurting those small animals. actually I don't see the difference between the two, after all we are the rulers, and they are here to do what we think is right!
George : Right Dickey , after we pinned that PNAC it became clear to me that we had to get rid of a whole bunch of manamal trash. Seems like we are doin ok. No credible opposition to worry about. The big corporations are working for us and we have control of the military. what can stop us. Once we get that preemptive strike goin in Iran , we can reinstate the draft, then we,el really havem by the balls.
Dick : sounds like a plan to me Georgy
George : See ya later Dicky boy!
Dick : yeh ,later Big Guy!{ Walks off snickering to himself) Boy have I got that dumb ass well trained
George : (thinking to himself) Man I,m gonna get rid of that asshole as soon as I can! Anyway all those terists are muslums. I on the other hand am a devout Christian, and because of that I have to get rid of those raghead manamals. They ain't people so I ain't offending anybody by killin um.Something else keeps bothering me though. Them Israelis ain't Christians either! Gonna have to do sumthin about that too.
The thing I like most though is that I have been tellin these manamal idiots about the war on terra!Tellin em for six years now It,s the only word I learned in Latin , Terra (Terra (name for the earth) I been wagein war against the earth HA HA HA HA HA screw all you manamals I ,m The Boss!
Been watching the debate - - -
So far, the best talk was given by Dennis Kucinich. Damn, I wish he was about a foot taller! Then he could become President! (Didn't you ever notice that people of "Presidential" caliber always seem to be tall? I guess "Tall"="Imposing" in the lizard brains of the great unwashed Public - possibly a holdover from the respect the lower orders gave to T. Rex.) The Republicans in the opposition to the resolution keep repeating the same lies about the resolution over and over and over again. Can't these people even get their facts straight before they start running their mouths? It's a short and sweet piece that says, basically, that the sense of Congress is that we don't want any more troops put into harm's way. What's wrong with that? Well, for Republicans to agree with it would mean that the great decider actually made a few misteaks. And we couldn't have that, now, could we? The slavish psycho-phancy of the bulk of the Republicans would be maddening, if there were not such a thing as a TV Remote. After the first hour, I used it a lot. The Democrats were at least interesting in their talks, and that because they had such varied approaches, while the Republicans said the same things over and over. It would have been funny if it weren't so tiresome. JC: Your talk was great - but FOR GOD'S SAKE GET SOME SLEEP! YOU LOOKED EXHAUSTED! Please - for the Nation's sake, take care of yourself; we need your voice now more than ever.
Lizard brains?
Does "Tall = Imposing" only apply to men? Interesting that some of the not-too-tall women in our Congress seem to be more courageous and rational than many of their male colleagues.
On the other hand, the not-too-tall Ron Paul (R-Texas) appears to be as "imposing" in his speech on the Iraq resolution as the "giant" Dennis Kucinich.
What a shame that all of these great speeches given by our progressive thinkers are wasted on a non-binding political sham.

Told to wait, a Marine dies
VA care in spotlight after Iraq war veteran's suicide
By Charles M. Sennott / Boston Globe
STEWART, Minn. -- It took two years of hell to convince him, but finally Jonathan Schulze was ready.
On the morning of Jan. 11, Jonathan, an Iraq war veteran with two Purple Hearts, neatly packed his US Marine Corps duffel bag with his sharply creased clothes, a framed photo of his new baby girl, and a leather-bound Bible and headed out from the family farm for a 75-mile drive to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Family and friends had convinced him at last that the devastating mental wounds he brought home from war, wounds that triggered severe depression, violent outbursts, and eventually an uncontrollable desire to kill himself, could not be drowned in alcohol or treated with the array of antianxiety drugs he'd been prescribed.
And so, with his father and stepmother at his side, he confessed to an intake counselor that he was suicidal. He wanted to be admitted to a psychiatric ward.
But, instead, he was told that the clinician who prescreened cases like his was unavailable. Go home and wait for a phone call tomorrow, the counselor said, as Marianne Schulze, his stepmother, describes it.
When a clinical social worker called the next day, Jonathan, 25, told again of his suicidal thoughts and other symptoms. And then, with his stepmother listening in, he learned that he was 26th on the waiting list for one of the 12 beds in the center's ward for post-traumatic stress disorder sufferers.
Four days later, on Jan. 16, he wrapped a household extension cord around his neck, tied it to a beam in the basement, and hanged himself. . . . "

Veterans face consecutive budget cuts
By Andrew Taylor / Associated Press
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration plans to cut funding for veterans' health care two years from now - even as badly wounded troops returning from Iraq could overwhelm the system.
Bush is using the cuts, critics say, to help fulfill his pledge to balance the budget by 2012.
After an increase sought for next year, the Bush budget would turn current trends on their head. Even though the cost of providing medical care to veterans has been growing rapidly - by more than 10 percent in many years - White House budget documents assume consecutive cutbacks in 2009 and 2010 and a freeze thereafter.
The proposed cuts are unrealistic in light of recent VA budget trends - its medical care budget has risen every year for two decades and 83 percent in the six years since Bush took office - sowing suspicion that the White House is simply making them up to make its long-term deficit figures look better. . . ."
Cutbacks
Thank you, Tahoe
This is further infuriating proof that BushCo doesn't support the troops, they exploit the troops.
I received this email
Hello everyone,
After two weeks of walking the halls of congress, attending trials and sharing my son's poem, there has been tremendous progress in getting our message of bringing our troops home to the lawmakers who decide the future course of Iraq.
Jim Moran of VA read Cloy's poem (attached) and told his scheduler to make an appointment to meet with me as soon as I was available. I have met with the chief of staff or senior aide of 6 representatives and 3 senators. Each day I knock down another layer of the isolation that surrounds the lawmakers.
But the biggest news of all is the person who will decide if the voices of peace will be heard has confirmed a meeting next Friday. I met briefly with John Murtha who chairs the subcommittee of defense on Friday and he wants to sit down and meet with Cloy and myself next Friday.
I would appreciate all prayers and good thoughts towards this meeting.
The Institute of Policy Studies is providing an office for me. I will open it on Monday and will forward the address and fax numbers then. Until then, any funds can be sent in care of the Instead of War coalition in St. Louis. They will forward them to me.
Thank you for all your help and support. This is really making a difference.

Grassroots America,
WHY I FIGHT FOR PEACE by Cloy Richards USMC
Because I can't forget no matter how hard I try.
They told us we were taking out advancing Iraqi forces,
But when we went to check out the bodies
they were nothing but women and children
desperately fleeing their homes because
they wanted to get out of the city
before we attacked in the morning.
Because my little brother, who is my job to protect,
decided to join the California National Guard
to get some money for college and
they promised he wouldn't go to Iraq.
instead three months after enlisting
he was sent to Iraq for one year.
Since he has been home for the last six months,
he refuses to talk to anyone, he lives by himself.
the only person he associates with is a friend of his,
the one other man out of his squad of thirteen men
who made it home alive.
He called me a few weeks ago for the first time
And told me he's having nightmares.
I asked what they were about and
He said they're about picking up the pieces
Of his fellow soldiers after a car bomb hit them.
Because every single one of the Marines I served with,
the really brave warriors, even when some friends and people
they looked up to got killed or lost an arm or leg,
they wouldn't cry, they just kept fighting.
They completed their mission.
Every one of them I have spoken to since we got home
has broken down crying in front of me,
saying all they can do since they got back
is bounce from job to job, drink and do drugs,
And contemplate suicide to end the pain.
Because I'm tired of drinking, bouncing from job to job
and contemplating suicide to end the pain.
Because every time I see a child,
I think of the thousands I've slaughtered.
Because every time I see a young soldier,
I think of the thousands Bush has slaughtered.
Because every time I look in the mirror
I see a casualty of the war.
Because I have a lot of lives I have to make up for,
the lives I have taken and
Because it's right.
That's why I fight.
Because of soldiers with wounds you can't see.
SURVIVOR'S GUILT by Cloy Richards USMC
I stare at this paper and don't know what to say
I don't feel right saying "happy memorial day"
I don't find anything happy in the price you've paid
We're both just pawns when this game called war gets played
My body came home but my spirit just stayed
That hot Iraqi day when you were slayed
Watching my back so I could sleep unafraid I heard the explosion from where I laid
And instantly I watched the skies go gray
I watched my life just float away
How could things go this way?
You were my brother in arms and you took my place
But not like the way that car bomb took your face
And blew off your limbs
When I think about it my head starts to spin
I get noxious when I think of your family
I want to tell them I truly am sorry
I'm sorry your son died protecting me
This isn't the way things were meant to be
You see that day your son took my duty
Your brother sacrificed four hours of sleep
So he could go guard a gate for me
Your fiancée took my fate from me
I'm sorry your father took my place for me
I'm sorry I can spend Memorial Day with my family
Today should have been a memorial for me
At least then the survivor could have lived guilt-free

Congressman...
Back on Jan. 31, 2006 you held a full Committee hearing concerning Presidential Signing Statements under the Bush Administration where the Hon. Mickey Edwards (R-Ok) testified to the matter of the President signing unconstitutional Bills into Law. That in doing so, it would constitute a direct violation of his Oath of Office.
The Military Commissions Act of 2006 is such an example. Within it's body, the Constitutionally protected right of Habeas Corpus was lifted, some say suspended, for those found to be domestic enemy combatants. Thus, any and every American that is cited as potentially being an enemy combatant qualifies for the unjust and unconstitutional treatment of no Habeas protections.
The right of Habeas Corpus is a Constitutionally enumerated right that, "can not be suspended unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it".
As with all instances, enumerated rights that are under consideration of Constitutional redefining, isn't it correct that any measures must go before the people of the States to be voted upon as an Amendment to the Constitution? Does Congress hold this privilege or does it lie at the feet of the people?
In Hamdi v. Rumsfeld, 542 U.S. 507 (2004), the Supreme Court reaffirmed the right of United States citizens to seek writs of habeas corpus even when declared enemy combatants.
In Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, 126 S.Ct. 2749 (2006), Salim Ahmed Hamdan petitioned for a writ of habeas corpus, challenging that the military commissions set up by the Bush administration to try detainees at Guantanamo Bay "violate both the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the four Geneva Conventions." In a 5-3 ruling, the Supreme Court rejected Congress's attempts to strip the courts of jurisdiction over habeas corpus appeals by detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Congress had previously passed the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2006 which stated in Section 1005(e), "Procedures for Status Review of Detainees Outside the United States".
On September 29, 2006, the House and Senate approved the Military Commissions Act of 2006 (MCA).
On February 9, 2007, a federal appeals court in Washington ruled that a U.S. citizen in U.S. military custody in Iraq has the right to challenge his detention in a federal court.
Appeals Court Backs Detainee
The mere fact that this Administration attempted to move Shawqi Ahmad Omar out of their custody and into that of the Iraqis so as to deney him his Constitutional right of Habeas Corpus demonstrates a willingness to circumvent Constitutional Law.
The breach of trust occurred on September 29, 2006, when the President willfully violated his Oath of Office to faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States of America, so as to sign into law an unconstitutional act.
On February 9, 2007, the Courts reaffirmed that breach of trust.
Where is the Congressional rebuke of this man's unconstitutional activities toward Americans?
No censure? No Impeachment? No accountability?
The precedent that is being set through Congresses abrogation of their Duty to hold the Executive accountable for high crimes and misdemeanors not only places the Presidency in a position beyond the boundary and scope of Constitutional Law, but also sends a clear message to the people; Democracy is dead in America.
UNACCEPTABLE!
Every day I act and try to stop this madness and watch Congress only talk about it. It would be nice to switch roles and talk about watching you act at stopping this madness for a change.

You aren't defending, protecting, preserving the Constitution of the USA
When you allow the usurpations of the Constitutional laws of the USA.
All of Which...
All of which isn't to say that Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-Ct) introduction of the Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007 (full textpdf) is an honorable attempt to right a wrong perpetrated upon the people of the U.S.A. and it's Constitution.
However, why attempt to restore that which can not be denied from the people but through a Constitutional Amendment? In which case it is through the consent of the people.
The MCA of 2006 was never a Constitutional Amendment but merely an attempt to garner concentrated power away from the people and into that of the Executive through a Bill made into law. A direct subversive attempt made against the people and the Constitution which defines the United States of America.
The correct course of action is to hold those that endorsed it and attempted to make, what otherwise would be unconstitutional, into the law of the land despite the scrutiny of the Supreme Court and the Supreme Law clause.

Debate, But Don,t Take Eye Off the Ball
Bush Administration-We know who they are & we know what they do. They have not changed; they have, in fact, gotten more defiant, and more determined to blunder forward with their neocon dream. No soft pleas of reason; no amount of solid, irrefutable evidence showing the wrongness of their actions; in fact-nothing short of immediately relieving them of command will stop their further slide into madness, or their absolute, unwavering determination to start Armageddon.
Unfortunately for our country, its people, and for the people of the Middle East and the world, our leaders who must act immediately seem incapable of doing so. The Republicans have proven yet again that they value party above all-above country, above principle, and certainly above honor. The Democrats have tried to recreate Bush, et al in an image more acceptable to them-they wish to see them as people who can be reasoned with, who can be gently chided into doing the "right thing". They also seem to think they have all the time in the world wait for this miracle to take place.
What is so very frustrating to people outside of the mesmerizing aura of DC, the Democrats do not seem to understand that one cannot reason with madmen, especially with determined, evil madmen. Ex-CIA Officials See Outbreak of Conflict with Iran Looming
"Milt Bearden, who served as CIA station chief in Pakistan from 1986-89, described the idea of military action in Iran as "insane." Still, he warned that "Americans should be prepared to wake up one morning and find themselves at war with Iran." He saw the trumpeting of evidence of Iran's assistance to the insurgency as a possible creation of a casus belli by the Bush administration.
Second, an anonymous CIA official who served in the Persian Gulf in 2003 said he did not believe the Bush administration was planning war with Iran, especially because "the military does not want to do this....Iran has a lot of ways to hurt us." Still, he warned war could break out by mistake.
So, whether by design or accident, it seems that Bush,s actions are headed on a course of conflict with Iran. Only you, Congressman Conyers, and your colleagues are in the position to stop the madness.
Accidental War of Aggression
Accidental War of Aggression - another BushCo oxymoron!
Bush Iran War Agenda: Trigger an "Accidental Conflict," as a pretext to justify "Limited Strikes"
Why is the US press silent on Brzezinski's warnings of war against Iran?
A non-binding resolution is one thing. More important is whether the democrats will use the power of the purse to bring an orderly, yet expeditious, end to this illegal war in Iraq - and prevent BushCo,s "accidental war of aggression" against Iran.
Most of the press is silent about BushCo attacking Iran
because they know who signs their paychecks. BushCo wants another war, the war profiteers want another war, the RePugs want another war, the Christianists want another war, so the media wants another war. They are PR whores for the economic and political elite in this country, and whores always do what their pimps tell them to do.
Carl Bernstein blasted the Bush administration today and condemned the media, citing the "great failure by the so-called mainstream press in this presidency, its unwillingness to look at the lies and disinformation and misinformation and add them up and say clearly, "Here's what they said; here's what the known facts were," because when that is done, you then see this isn't a partisan matter. This is a matter of the truth, particularly about this war. This is a presidency that is not willing to tell the truth very often if it is contrary to its interests. It's not about ideology from whence I say this."
We all know Bush is a pathological liar and a serial violator of the Constitution, most of America knows it, yet Democrats do not even dare whisper about Impeachment on the floor of Congress, or anywhere else, for that matter.
It's shameful.
It's abject moral cowardice.
PERIOD.
Street talk
You,ve answered the obvious with a colorful and easy to understand analogy - bravo!
So if Pelosi, Hoyer, Conyers et al are indeed shameful and abject cowards, when it comes to standing up against the evils of BushCo, where does that leave the American public?
If the words, evidence, pleas, and down right begging to Impeach or Remove Bush/Cheney is ignored by the Democratic leadership - what course of action does the American public have?
Are we now living in the era when Democracy has turned into Totalitarianism (as historical authors warned against) and there is no viable political party to turn to for resolution and restitution of constitutional law and governance?
Admittedly, I (along with millions of other rational thinkers) am frustrated beyond belief.
Should we all just accept this situation - grab our ankles and kiss it goodbye?
I've defended Chairman Conyers many times, and I've
criticized him. I appreciate all he's done during his distinguished career in Congress. He's been a courageous leader on so many important issues, BUT THE ONLY ISSUE THAT MATTERS RIGHT NOW IS REMOVING BUSH AND CHENEY FROM OFFICE.
On THAT issue, nearly every Democrat in Congress has been a sniveling coward. Since Congress convened 6 weeks ago, Democrats have taken some encouraging steps, they've had some hearings, they've passed some legislation, but that's like cleaning the kitchen floor while the house burns down.
Quit cleaning the kitchen floor, Democrats, get up off your freaking knees and PUT THE DAMN FIRE OUT!
See that smirking guy with the flamethrower? Wearing the fire chief hat with the "Jesus Saves" button on it? Guess what? He's not a fire chief, he just thinks he is. I know his daddy told him he could be a fire chief when he grew up, I know he keeps telling you he's saving the house from the arsonists, but burning it down in order to save it is not a very good fire prevention strategery.
Are you still with me, Democrats? Good.
Do you hear all that screaming for help? Yes, I know you've cleaned some of Flamethrower Bush's piss off the kitchen floor, but can we focus on the screaming for help? It's kind of important. Do you hear it? When children are trapped in a burning room, they tend to scream for help.
Yes, I know there's a calendar in their room with a big circle around Election Day 2008, I know you figure that if they can just learn how to breathe fire for a couple years everything will be just fine. And yes, I know Flamethrower Bush has sent some other children down the chimney to help the trapped children learn how to breathe fire, and that you're busy arguing about that, but this fire isn't going to put itself out.
What? There isn't enough time to put the fire out? You don't have enough hoses? It's not your responsibility, you're just floor cleaners? But you're definitely against fire and are going to have a meeting about the danger of fire as soon as you finish cleaning the floor?
That's good to know.
Thanks.
But...But...But...
Impeachment will divide a nation:
Well, most whores and crack addicts hate it when the pimps and pushers are removed from the streets, NO? Only then does recovery and real jobs look favorable.
Unless pimps and pushers are favored over people that are free of addiction with real jobs.
Impeachment takes too long:
Not only does it take a while to round up the pimps and pushers, you kinda have to be prepared to put a worthwhile effort into the process because others are bound to come along to fill the void. Eventually with enough persistence the job gets done, NO?
Unless pimps and pushers are favored over safe and secure streets.
Impeachment is off the table:
What table? The bucket brigade just threw it into the burning house thinking the floor cleaners could use more furniture to have to shuffle around.
This way the pimps and pushers don't have to be bothered. In fact, they seem to be favored. They keep the addicts occupied and the whores employed.
Fire fight'n
Hi Rusty,
First of all, I agree that the honorable John Conyers has been a courageous leader in the House - at least historically speaking. Even watched JC on YouTube today(thanks Max) - he still sounded courageous, but looked tired.
However, I,m not sure if JC and other Democrats are really cowards or are simply changing their political strategy and tactics. Codependence? Maybe all politicians have just become completely self-serving and democracy is merely a distant memory.
Regardless, I also agree with your assertion that Bush/Cheney must be removed from office. No doubt BushCo is the primary cause of virtually everything that has devastated our world in the last six years. But I certainly think there are other issues that are of immediate importance as well; i.e. Iraq war, Iran, Russia, China, domestic policies, etc. And while removing BushCo from power would certainly help the enormous problems we face, I have yet to identify an alternative (candidate) for the position that I have complete faith and confidence in. Hard to imagine that anyone could be worse - but then I have been completely fooled by the new Democratic led Congress. (Hey Tahoe - boy do I feel stupid!)
Your kitchen fire metaphor is excellent and got me thinking. But I view our government crisis more like a forest fire. I live in the Northwest (Idaho) and the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) is located in Boise. By in large, the NIFC is a reactive agency - not a proactive one. Sure, they do promote and practice a certain degree of fire prevention - but how do you prevent a lightning strike in the wilderness?
When a forest fire is located, the "powers at hand" make a decision; deploy resources to extinguish the fire, deploy forces to control the burn, or allow a natural burn without suppression. Yellowstone National Park experienced a natural burn policy in 1988 and the effects of NIFC,s decision are still being evaluated today. On the negative - this fire destroyed approximately 36% of the park, much of the wildlife died, and it caused millions of dollars in property damage. The positive aspect is that Yellowstone was allowed to experience the natural cycle of life, death, and rebirth (ecological succession).
Satirical Conclusion
Of course there is nothing "natural" about BushCo policy, but I can only wonder if Congress (Dems and Repubs) have secretly agreed to treat the Middle East like a natural burn. Think of the positive aspect. The Middle East will be allowed to experience the (not so natural) cycle of life, death, and rebirth in a very accelerated way. And after all, the vast majority of trees being burned down are not really human - it,s not like they,re Americans - right? As for those sacrificial American trees being burned - it,s not like they,re important people - like our elected officials - right?
We've got to think about the greater good. BushCo, the neocons, congressional members, and the barron class cannot achieve their goals without oil - right?
Serious Conclusion
When Congress approves BushCo,s new $245 billion war budget next month I,m sure they,ll say a ceremonial prayer for the quick and victorious conquest of the entire region.
I now see very little difference between BushCo and Congress - and the endless aggressive wars makes me think of Mark Twain,s The War Prayer
To repeat another Mark. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. As things stand - I vote No Confidence in our government.
Sorry, Congressman, but I have lost faith and confidence in you too. How sad it is for the world that you have decided to end your otherwise distinguished career with such shameful performance. The legacy of the 110th Congress will be forever tied to this disgraceful and tragic Bush Presidency.
2003 was a long time ago.
During the Christmas recess of 2005, George used his recess appointment powers to put 20 civilian sycophants in Pentagon jobs that were formerly held by experienced military patriots.
It is quite possible that in 2003, the leaders of the military at the Pentagon were against attacking Iran. But George uses recess appointments the way he uses signing statements. Any time Congress thinks they have any power left, George waits until they celebrate a religious or national holiday, then acts like a 'thief in the night', to deny them their Constitutional place as a co-equal branch of Government.
The world has never been allowed to tell little Georgie no. His history tells us that when he feels like attacking Iran, the rationale that makes it OK in his tiny little brain, will be provided. If he senses resistance, he'll eliminate the resistors.
He didn't wait for bogus investigations of his criminal activity to be proved fruitless, he fired any US attorney that exhibited the integrity necessary to enforce the law against him.
Neither George W. Bush, nor Alfred E. Newman, worry.
Come to think of it, I've never seen the two of them together at the same time. Coincidence? I think not.
When it's time to kill Iranian brown people, the BushCo sycophants needed to make the military fall in line, will already be in position.
There is enough firepower in the Persian Gulf now, to obliterate the middle east. All he needs is the rationale and a stalemate in Congress. Eventually he will hit the combination that makes it OK.
George isn't reactive, he's pre-emtive. The longer the USA remains a debating society and not a doing society, the more power the forces of BushCo will assemble.
It looks as though Bush is "gung-ho" for Iran -- even "itching."
First it was concern for Iran's nuclear capabilities, now it's to Iranians being in Iraq, Iranians supplying insurgents with bombs discernible by their serial numbers(?)to Iraq, to absolute dead certainty that Iranians are supplying deadly roadside bombs to Iraq insurgents, etc. Sounds much like that which we have all heard the likes of before.
"The New York Times
February 14, 2007
Bush Says Iran Is Source of Deadly Bombs
By DAVID STOUT and BRIAN KNOWLTON
WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 -- President Bush said today he is certain that elements of the Iranian government are supplying deadly roadside bombs that kill American troops in Iraq, even if the innermost circle of the government is not involved.
Mr. Bush said it had been established beyond a doubt that a branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps known as the Quds Force is supplying Shiite groups inside Iraq with particularly deadly, Iranian-designed weapons known as explosively formed penetrators, or E.F.P.s.
"We know that," Mr. Bush said at a White House news conference.
The United States regards the Quds Force as part of the Iranian government, since the force has historically been under the command of Iran,s senior religious leaders. And even if the highest officials in Tehran have not directly ordered the Quds Force to supply weapons to Iraqi Shiites, they are still complicit, Mr. Bush said.
"What,s worse?" Mr. Bush asked. "That the government knew, or that the government didn,t know?"
The weapons include squat canisters designed to explode and spit out molten balls of copper that cut through armor. The canisters are perhaps the most feared weapon faced by American and Iraqi troops, and American military leaders say they have killed more than 170 United States soldiers in the past three years.
~~~~~
"I intend to do something about it," Mr. Bush said, alluding to the armor-piercing weapons. He also said, as he has repeatedly, that an Iran armed with nuclear weapons would be a peril to world peace, although he steered wide of any suggestion that the United States might wage war against Iran. . . .
~~~~~
Asked why he had resisted calls, including from the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, for negotiations with Iran, he replied: "If I thought we could achieve success, I would sit down. But I don,t think we can achieve success right now, and therefore we,ll want to work with other nations."
Of course, Bush doesn't "think we can achieve success right now" -- how could he when he's plotting and scheming war on Iran?
Iran is Source
Damn, how thoughtless of me, why it's
probably been the Iranians killing the Iraqis for the last four years -- but it's just now we're learning that for the past three years "squat canisters designed to explode and spit out molten balls of copper that cut through armor" as supplied by Iranians have killed, now count 'em, "more than 170 United States soldiers." Imagine, hand-picked, hand-counted, individual weapon examinations -- tracked and traced! Amazing, when BushCo can't even come up with the accurate number of U.S. soldiers or Iraqis that have lost their lives and, many times, not even how.
I have no knowledge when it comes to weaponry, but when a bomb explodes, it "shreds" itself as well as that around it, doesn't it? O.K., I'm playing dumb -- how else would shrapnel be emitted?
