More support for Commission

Submitted by JC on February 13, 2009 - 10:36pm.

ThinkProgress.com has a story listing the growing support for a commission like the one I introduced on the first day of the 111th Congress, HR 104.  This follows the USA Today/Gallup poll demonstrating over 70 percent of Americans favor an investigation of the Bush Administration for its role in politicizing the Department of Justice.

I think this is progress

Nice Photo. I like it. Thanks to Alex Wong of Getty Images

I like also that the gallup numbers show that 37% either don't know or don't care, or figure they'll get handed thier heads. This means that 63% do know and do care. That is a filibuster proof majority. An asset or a liability, depending on which side you are on. And a mere moment, not a result. The imbalance will grow more lopsided as the facts, one by one, are poured from the bag the cat is already out of. Until the opinion itself becomes defacto admission of guilt. Which, if you squint just right (left), it already looks like.

But that is not the Horse being beaten. It is not about guilt or innocence. nor crime being punished. It is about who is in control of this Country. Is it those who RIGHT the Laws, or is it those who break them? It is about being able to see where we are going, by being able to see where we have been. It is about charting our mutual course without a pack of criminals choosing which Star we are allowed to set our sight upon. It is about Freedom.

I signed Mr Leahys' petition for a truth Commission. Tho I thought the wording was poor, I value the Idea VERY highly. I am willing to make a deal, sight unseen, to forgo punishment of anyone who testifies to the Truth Commission, regardless of the severity of the crime, unless the testimony is incomplete or perjury. In this way, everything comes out, where everyone can see it, and the crimes will end. It worked for South Africa. It will work for us. The effect is to hammer forgiveness into a weapon effective against ONLY those who refuse to accept forgiveness.

In this way our Country will be saved from itself, our image overseas will be resurrected, and control of our government will be returned to those who write the laws.

In other news, and which seems to me a tiny model of the problem, which can be solved in the same manner, I returned a traffic ticket to the local Police, yesterday. Enclosed in the envelope was a letter I posted on this Blog, at :

I do hope the Chairman finds the time to carefully review it, in that it is Judiciary Business, in that I am indeed going to solve this problem if it kills me, and it might, and in that it would illustrate certain principles discussed above.

I appreciate this forum.

Democrats May Be Headed to Showdown With Obama Over Bush Probes

Democrats May Be Headed to Showdown With Obama Over Bush Probes

Some Democrats in Congress don’t want to let George W. Bush leave town.

They want to continue investigating alleged wrongdoing by former administration officials like Karl Rove just as President Barack Obama is urging them to turn the page.

House Judiciary Committee Democrats have a long bill of particulars. They want to force Bush-era officials to testify about the firing of nine U.S. attorneys and alleged politicization of law enforcement. They want to press inquiries into Bush’s program of warrantless wiretaps and into allegations that suspected terrorists were tortured in U.S. custody or turned over to other countries for such mistreatment.

Senator Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who leads the Judiciary Committee, has called for a “truth and reconciliation commission” to investigate such Bush administration tactics.

So far, Obama hasn’t endorsed the probes.

Obama, not Bush, now seeking delay of Rove deposition

Former Bush Deputy White House Chief of Staff Karl Rove has a new president urging Congress not to force him to testify next week.

President Barack Obama.

In a court brief quietly filed Monday, Michael Hertz, Obama's acting assistant attorney general, said it was necessary to delay an effort to force Rove to be deposed in a congressional investigation into the firing of nine US Attorneys and the alleged political prosecution of a former Alabama governor.

Hertz said an effort was underway to find a "compromise" for Rove, and requested two weeks to broker a deal before proceeding in court.

Justice Department seeks to hold back lawsuits as FOIA rules rewritten
Despite President Barack Obama's vow to open government more than ever, the Justice Department is defending Bush administration decisions to keep secret many documents about domestic wiretapping, data collection on travelers and U.S. citizens, and interrogation of suspected terrorists.

In half a dozen lawsuits, Justice lawyers have opposed formal motions or spurned out-of-court offers to delay court action until the new administration rewrites Freedom of Information Act guidelines and decides whether the new rules might allow the public to see more.

In only one case has the Justice Department agreed to suspend a FOIA lawsuit until the disputed documents can be re-evaluated under the yet-to-be-written guidelines. That case involves negotiations on an anti-counterfeiting treaty, not the more controversial, secret anti-terrorism tactics that spawned the other lawsuits as well as Obama's promises of greater openness.

Don Siegelman:NO Deal

In an email today:

Once again I am calling on you to make sure Karl Rove testifies under oath before the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, February 23rd.

Rove has been subpoenaed. At first he claimed executive privilege protection and emphatically said he would not show up. Rove and his lawyer asked President Obama to extend the same executive privilege protection that President Bush had extended to Rove.

The White House responded by urging Congress and Rove "to cut a deal," to reach a settlement. Now we learn from Rove's lawyer that Rove is in negotiations with the Judiciary Committee to reach some accommodation before Monday.

There should be no deal offered to Karl Rove, no grant of executive privilege, no immunity, and no accommodation. What the American people want and need to begin the process of restoring justice is for Karl Rove to be brought before the committee, placed under oath, and forced to answer the tough questions about his abuse of power and the use of the Department of Justice as a political weapon.

Please write, call, fax, and email Congressman John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, to thank him for his commitment to the truth and for his determination to bring Karl Rove before his committee.

Chairman Conyers' Office
Office: (202) 225-5126
Fax: (202) 225-0072
Email: john.conyers@mail.house.gov

Thank Chairman Conyers, commend him, and ask him to stay strong and hold fast! There should be no deals cut and no immunity given to Karl Rove.

You may also call 1-800-826-3688 and ask to be connected to Congressman John Conyers' office. Thank him, praise him, and ask him to stay the course with Karl Rove. No deals. No immunity.

Sincerely,

Amen to that

And while waiting for the effects of new policies to kick in, some immediate truths and justice could be profoundly soothing - not to mention essential to the functioning of a Democracy.

I'm waiting for Obama to express his understanding of this, now that he's taken office...

Presidential.

Mr President Obama was a thrill to listen to. Deeply inspiring.

Governor Bob wasn't. Brought to mind an evil Mr. Rogers. Sugar does not make crap easier to swallow. On the contrary, it makes the listener aware of the very little respect his intellect is accorded. Been there, done that, it failed, and We noticed.

I suggest the use of the term, "Evil Mr. Rogers."

If it brings to mind a movie starring Wesley Snipes and Watzizname, well Good!

Postscript : In other news, I didn't get arrested. Pretty annoying. I will have to push. I will mention how it goes.
