Diagram of Overlapping Abuses At DOJ and the White House
Slate put up a new interactive feature this week that is definitely worth a look. It is a diagram of five of the most serious abuses of power at the Bush White House and Department of Justice--who the major players are, how they relate to each other, and links to relevant stories and documents. Each of the five areas have been major focal points in the Judiciary Committee's oversight of the Administration in the last year-and-a-half, and will continue to be of great importance in the work that still lies ahead.

Congressman,
Slate highlights the abuses. They can not halt the abuses. Only the Judiciary Chairman can.
Why won't he?

Support and Defend...
Congressman,
Your Oath binds you to the defense of the Constitution. You agreed to faithfully adhere to said oath, thus a contract to the Republic was made, namely through and with your constituents. By this agreement you obligated yourself to support this Constitution without a mental reservation OR a purpose of evasion.
You agreed to support the whole Constitution. Within the Constitution lies Article II. Please show respect and support for the Offices of the President and Vice President of the U.S.A. by opening an investigation into these High Crimes against the Republic by members from within the Administration that have damaged the Offices of President and Vice President of the U.S.A. The future of the Republic is at stake.
Granted, things are off track. America knows this as I suppose you do. And America knows, as I suppose you do too, that this is not a "Take two and call me in the morning..." type of solution. However so, the urgency, as I see it, IS the Offices of the President and Vic President of the U.S.A.
Whomever wins the election of 2008 and becomes the president and no action is taken to correct the dignity and lawfulness to that Office, they will inherit the exact same diagram and play book the current president is following. Once elected, they will become the one who can order the surveillance upon you and there is nothing you can do about it. But please, let me press my point home even further with Barrack Obama for he has seen to this fate. His VOTE proves me correct.
The contrarian in me asks; Who's to say that the elections of 2008 Will produce a House and/or Senate that will be able to pass legislation to undo Barrack Obama's vote to grant himself immunity from ordering warrantless surveillance on Americans? Repeat that question and then ask yourself what a dictatorship looks like.
What's to make the telecoms stop? They're immune!
Here's another question to ponder about; Who's to say that the elections of 2008 won't elect a Congress that isn't veto proof should they actually craft said needed legislation? I mean, prove Barrack Obama won't VETO the bill to undo his vote.
Will he undo this law through a signing statement? An Executive order to override the will of Congress?
And lastly; What will it mean when the SCOTUS rules that the vote to allow immunity for crimes, subsequently signed into law ex post facto(IMPEACHABLE in ITSELF), was unconstitutional and violated the People's Rights? I mean, would that then mean that Barrack Obama cast a vote AGAINST the Republic...
Support the Offices of the President and Vice President of the U.S.A.
Lord knows, they need restoration about now.
There is a better FISA fix, you know this more than any of us do.
There lies within, a remedy necessary. PLEASE USE IT!

Breaking news on subpoena enforcement
Judge Bates rules that Bush's advisors do not have immunity
From Rawstory:
"WASHINGTON — President Bush's top advisers are not immune from congressional subpoenas, a federal judge ruled Thursday in an unprecedented dispute between the two political branches.
The House Judiciary Committee wants to question the president's chief of staff, Josh Bolten, and former legal counsel Harriet Miers, about the firing of nine U.S. attorneys. But President Bush says they are immune from such subpoenas. They say Congress can't force them to testify or turn over documents.
U.S. District Judge John Bates disagreed. He said there's no legal basis for that argument. He said that Miers must appear before Congress and, if she wants to refuse to testify, she must do so in person."

Environmental racism or "blind eye" oversight?
Not long ago Mr. Conyers wrote a post about the high number of black people in America with AID's. The phrase he coined, "environmental racism", implied that geography played a primary role in the death sentences these economically disenfranchised victim class citizens received.
This weekend the Center for Disease Control released a report explaining that it had under-reported aid's cases in America by 40%, with the highest increase in America's black community.
Isn't this organization under congressional oversight? If so, who's duty is it to oversee it's truthiness?
By lulling America's black community into a false sense of security with "fixed intelligence" regarding the aid's epidemic, aren't "blind eye" overseers in Congress responsible for a percentage of the deaths?
This looks more like a genocidal act due to "blind eye oversight", than anything resembling environmental racism.
Since the report has been in the works since 2001, and Congress always gets to see the evidence before it gets presented to the public, I'm left with the impression that the phrase "environmental racism" is a ruse to distract us from the fact that Mr. Conyers chose political expediency over oversight.
Since I'm pretty cynical on a good day, I've been waiting for an explanation regarding his sudden compassion for aid's patients. Now I have my answer. It was a pre-emptive attempt at damage control.
Environmental racism? I think not. It's attritional genocide due to "blind eye oversight" by America's Congressional Black Caucus.
Slate's Diagram Contains Concise Summary re: Prosecution
In the Slate diagram linked above, there is this concise summary of reasons pro/con prosecution of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. IMHO, the reasons for far outweigh the reasons against:
Bush:
Cheney:
It would seem that the legal and moral reasons against prosecution are rather weak and in fact, are quite suspect. Why would the Speaker of the House obstruct inquiry, and prosecution of crimes by the Executive? Perhaps this odd and dangerous apparent indifference of the Speaker to the Executive's violations of the Constitution itself also warrants investigation?
Ain't smart enough to figure it out? Watch NY's GOP for pointers
Hey Mr. Conyers! The GOP Just-Us department in NYS has been working on the same problem as you. How do you deal with people who stonewall, misdirect investigations, and piecemeal the dissemination of information so as to delay said investigation? Prosecute them for obstruction like they are doing to Elliot Spitzer's toadies and the NY State Police.
There are ways of dealing with people who've made it a habit of breaking the law, all it takes is a belief in the law, and a willingness to act on the fact that Americans gave the Dems the election in '06, so the criminals who've damaged America's reputation will be brought to justice.
If you refuse to provide us with justice, the GOP will use the laws you refuse to utilize, to convict you of exactly what they themselves are most guilty of.
I don't care how many ex post facto laws you allow to be written, sooner or later the snakes you've been sleeping with will get you.
In an eat or be eaten world, maybe it's time you stopped playing with your food.
Impeach'em all and let Satan sort them out.
That's an excellent
article and interactive feature; very illustrative, informative, and - as Unspun pointed out - concise in its analysis regarding why some of these officials have not yet been held accountable. It's interesting that after investigations conducted by Congress, legal experts, and journalists; all roads lead to impeachmenst of Bush and Cheney - and to obstruction by Pelosi.
We are growing increasingly weary and disturbed by Pelosi's refusal to allow the House to use all available tools to restore the rule of law. I agree with Unspun's final point that this is highly suspect and, perhaps, also requires investigation. I hope the House Speaker proves us wrong, that she seriously considers the option of impeachment(s) soon.
Thank you for sharing this Slate article with us, Chairman.
Sidebar: John Dean: "Congress Well Aware of Bush's Imperial...
...Presidency and Abuses of Power". Dean was actually scheduled to testify at the hearing on July 25th, following Rep. Kucinich, but had to cancel because of illness. Here are a few snips from his column:
Mr. Dean's whole column is worthy of reading, IMHO. It is extremely unfortunate that he wasn't able to testify at the Judiciary Committee Hearings. BTW, IMHO, if anything is to change, there must be a new President who is not a "conservative Republican" and who will, hopefuly, restore the balance of the federal judiciary and Supreme court which is now so extremely fanatically partisan as to endanger us and our liberties until they are removed from office.
I wondered why John Dean wasn't there
Thanks for explaining that Unspun, and for bringing us his perspective on this. I hope that John Dean will be invited back to future hearings, ideally impeachment inquiry hearings.
Dean confirms the testimony of Elizabeth Holtzman, and the the concerns we've expressed here and elsewhere, regarding the need for bipartisan support. He also addresses the very topic of our discussions that too many members of Congress lack the knowledge and perspectives essential to making good decisions. How can we gain support from members of Congress who don't have an understanding of history, current facts, laws, and the threat of "bloated presidential powers"?
I was flabbergasted on Friday by the ignorance of constitutional law, international treaties, and House rules exhibited by some Republican members of Congress. Needing to be reminded that the House has to vote on the issue before an impeachment hearing can occur, that policy differences are not the same thing as violating the Constitution, and that possession of WMD's does not necessarily constitute an imminent threat and justify preemptive war - these are all very disturbing examples of the level of incompetence demonstrated by individuals entrusted with the future of our Democracy. It's no surprise that Dean found members of Congress to be ignorant about Watergate, as well.
Perhaps, some members are choosing to be ignorant, or are feigning ignorance. Perhaps, their rigid beliefs render them incapable of learning. It makes it very difficult for citizens to know how to compel these members to make good decisions, as they also seem either incapable or unwilling to listen to the reasonable justifications for our concerns.
I look forward to reading Dean's article - hopefully it will provide me with some insights.
How Can Congress "Support & Defend" Constitution if they Don't
even have a clue what the Constitution says, or what it means? Astonishing and reprehensible that high school civics students have a better grasp of Constitutional law than sitting members of Congress.
IMHO, there should be required remedial classes for all members of Congress to review the entire Constitution, and they should have to pass a "final exam" before they are allowed to vote on any more legislation. But then that would make sense, and since we seem to be living in Alice's wonderland (or maybe it's Dante's Inferno?) they probably will continue to bask in their ignorance.
I was thinking that, too...
...that they should have to go back to the 8th grade. Maybe Slaughter and the House Rules Committee can look into amending some rules?
; )
Someone in Congress needs to Act--their Ignorance is Shameful
and if they were capable of it, they should feel humiliated by their astounding ignorance of the very basic knowledge required to do their jobs.
But Nancy says
she isn't aware of any crimes, and she might let impeachment go forward if someone could show her any actual crimes. Does she need a bloody knife with a Bu$h hand wrapped around the handle? Or does Rohatyn have her so sense-deadened that she is all three monkeys?
Pelosi on 'The View' today, said she hasn't seen enough evidence
Nancy Pelosi was on TV with her family this morning, promoting a new book.
It was a standard "aren't I wonderful" kind of interview right up until Joy Behar asked her point blank why she hasn't pushed for the impeachment of Bush. She didn't say it was the responsibility of the Judiciary Committee, she said she didn't because it would have impeded the bi-partisanship Congress would depend on to pass much needed legislation. Then she went on to talk about her meager legislative victories, without once mentioning the GOP obstructionism that has plagued the 110th Congress, or the incredibly high number of veto's by Bush.
When further pressed, she insisted that IF there was actually honest to goodness evidence of criminal activity by these people, she would be more than willing to take up the issue.
Two things struck me about the interview. Neither Whoopie nor Elizabeth Hasselback had much to say, and the audience immediately broke out in spontaneous applause the second Joy finished asking about impeachment.
It seemed as if Mrs. Pelosi was throwing the ball back to you Mr. Conyers.
I might feel a little better if I knew that the information you possessed about the crimes of Bush, was shared with the majority leader of the house, in such a way that she couldn't deny it.
By the sounds of today's interview, being a good soldier might just get you thrown under a bus by one of the gentrifiers of SF's waterfront district. The least she could have done was deflect it back to you. Instead, she alludes that you aren't doing your job.
There really is no honor among thieves.
Evidence of criminal activity
The practice that some call "water boarding" was determined to be torture long ago. Our country is bound by a treaty not to torture. "Water boarding" is a crime. Speaker Pelosi was briefed in 2002 on interrogation techniques to be used, including water torture. She did nothing to stop it or bring it into the light.
There is her evidence of criminal activity.
You're right, Mark, there is no honor in her deflections.
Why she is still Speaker of the House, why she is allowed to hold any office - why she is not serving some kind of sentence - is a mystery to me.
"Honor" among thieves? Mutual CYA?
Bush could not have continued to rob and wreak havoc on this country and its Constitution, without the complicity of Ms. Pelosi, and who knows how many key Democrats who similarly knowingly allied themselves with criminals.
IMHO, there needs to be at the very least, an investigation to find out how so many of our "leaders" could be so: Frightened? Blackmailed? Brainwashed? as to knowingly allow multiple violations of the Constitution to be committed and yet refuse to do anything about it. The dark, moldy, cellars of Congress must be opened up to daylight, to cleanse the rot that has overtaken our Capitol over the last 7 years.
What matters most is that this Executive lawbreaking and Congressional complicity must not be allowed to be repeated ever again in the future. The only way to ensure that is to determine what went wrong. The guilty enablers in Congress can plead that they felt impelled to go along with Bush/Cheney, based on whatever skewed "intelligence" data they were allowed to see. Whatever.
The road to Hell is paved with "good intentions" and unless we want this country to remain in Hell, we need to find out how that road got paved and change direction ASAP.
Koryannder has often said that it's Ms. Pelosi's
connections to Felix Rohaytn that have caused much of her reluctance. I don't have enough knowledge about all of that one way or another to state definitively how I feel about it, but here is just one (sample) item of the alleged connection:
Whatever the reason(s) for Ms. Pelosi's refusal to become aligned with Impeachment hearings does in no way excuse her from the enabling of the criminals by removing Impeachment proceedings, the same for which was provided us by the Constitution in the event of such despots as we have in our government.
I'm beginning to believe that she, too, should be impeached for her complicity and obstruction of justice!
"There is nothing to fear but fear itself."

Naive
Of course feline, being a naive accomplice is defensible, however knowing after the fact of that complicity to the crime of torture and continuing to mount such an ignorant defense is tantamount to an admission of knowledge that she did know what she was approving... WAR CRIMES!
Can't the Congressman get the Speaker before the Committee, offer her immunity, and let her lay upon her own sword, spilling her guts for all to see?
Human life means nothing to a woman, mother and daughter when she forgoes preserving the integrity to human life, instead defending a cause to destroy human life... "Predicated on false pretext." She has bills to pass, money to make, people to let die. That is her priority.
That sounds like a good idea to me, Max...
... offering her immunity and hearing her testimony on this issue, and others - although, as a member of Congress, she may already have immunity(?). I definitely think we need to hear more and better explanations from her, under oath, and on the record.
Agree
She needs to explain why she's permitted blatant criminality by the Bush administration and continues to refuse to do her job and prosecute. If it takes immunity to get this whole rotten mess sorted out, then I think the Chairman should see how this could be implemented.
BTW, I'm posting below about one more violation of Congressional rules by Bush that needs to be added to the Chairman's list of prosecutable offenses committed by the Bush Administration.
Election...
Nancy has an election to win...
Why reveal herself to be the cover for War Criminals?
After all, who'd re-elect that kind of person?
The first and worst...
I think in her mind it would be a great loss for her... pocket book.
Almost as great as the loss she's bestowing upon the Republic by shielding these crimes.
... Almost!
John,
It appears that Nancy doesn't mind being lied to...
It appears that Nancy doesn't mind sending our youth to die for that lie...
It appears that Nancy doesn't mind defrauding America for that lie...
It appears that Nancy doesn't mind inhumane treatment...
It appears that Nancy doesn't mind at all...

E. Holtzman

"It's a two-fer!"
Pelosi's like the Queen of England--a Figurehead
For whatever reason, IMHO she seems to be content with reveling in the glory and the pomp and circumstance of her position as Speaker, without feeling any need to dirty her hands by actually doing the hard work and heavy lifting required of a true Leader in the position of Speaker. All glory but no guts?
Why? It's hard to say, but I have a few theories: One--she doesn't want to work hard, and is content to let Hoyer run things. Two--she was given the position as "window dressing" (First Female Speaker) but with the understanding that she'd not have much real power. Three--Hoyer and the Blue Dogs have told her that they will oppose any move to hold the Bush Administration accountable. Four--she's neutered and perhaps legally compromised herself by being briefed by the Bush Administration on their illegal actions re: torture, etc--and she didn't take the proper actions. She didn't go to Congress and institute Impeachment hearings when she came to understand that the Eighth Amendment (as well as others) were being violated.
Actually, I believe it may well be a combination of two or more of the above motivations that keep Madame Speaker from fulfilling her responsibilities: To the People of this nation, To defending the Co-equal status of Congress and To the Constitution. But then, she's probably one of those Congress people that John Dean spoke of--the ones who don't even understand the Constitution, much less, their solemn sworn duty to defend It.
Bush Violated Congressional Mandate-Omitting War Costs...
from the budget. He's leaving the next President a $482 BILLION BUDGET DEFICIT:
"...The next president will inherit a record budget deficit of $482 billion, according to a new Bush administration estimate released Monday...But the numbers could go even higher if the economy performs worse than the White House predicts...A $482 billion deficit, however, would easily surpass the record deficit of $413 billion set in 2004."
The new figure actually underestimates the deficit, since it LEAVES OUT $80 BILLION IN WAR COSTS. In a break from tradition _ and in violation of new mandates from Congress _ the White House did not include its full estimate of war costs.
So, by my calculations that means an actual budget deficit of At Least: $562 BILLION DOLLARS???? And he's got 6 more months to keep spending OUR money??? Unchecked???
Mr. Chairman, do you see, cannot you make your colleagues see, that by leaving the Bush administration unfettered you are allowing them to continue to spread excrement, like demented chimpanzees, all over the entire government, and the American people? The longer you allow them to continue running amok, the more excrement that will have to be cleaned up by the next President and Congress.

But, But...We're "fighting them 'over there', so they we won't
...have to 'fight them' over here"..., right? Hmmm....if by fighting them "over there", we're not safer 'over here'--what was the reason for the invasion & continued occupation of Iraq?
Oh, the pundits keep telling us how the surge "Worked... & 'everybody' has to admit that it 'worked'--but oddly enough, they don't bother reporting that 61 People were killed and hundreds were wounded in Kirkuk on Monday or that bombings in the last few days have killed over 200 people in Karrada, Baghdad & Kirkuk Maybe the press doesn't want us to worry? Maybe they don't want people to stop and think that if we hadn't invaded Iraq in the first place, we wouldn't have unleashed this simmering sectarian violence--which shows no real signs of ending:
So, if they keep killing each other while we are there (getting our own troops killed in the bargain)--we're "winning", but if we pull out and they keep killing each other (but not our troops), then we're "losing". That seems to be what McCain's saying. Hurry, let's print up some more money, to keep the whole mess going. Meanwhile, bin Laden & the Taliban are increasingly causing havoc in Afghanistan...
All as Congress sits on the sidelines, paracticing dereliction of their oversight duties.
In the midst of all of the foregoing, I have an eery feeling --
is it just me?
As you may or may not know, Blackwater Security is pulling out of Iraq, stating, more or less, that they want to focus on other issues. O.K., for Blackwater to pull out of Iraq is not overly astounding, but the TIMING is. It follow on the heels of two weeks of martial law training in Indianapolis, Indiana, last month. There are over 800 detention camps, across the boards, most having railraod tracks leading to them.
This, coupled with the threat of an attack on Iran, the relative quiet from Bush, Cheney, and, even from McCain.
Of course, Impeachment proceedings would curtail any such possibilities.
"There is nothing to fear but fear itself."

Terrorism, on American soil, by Americans, to Americans.
There was once was a veteran from Tenessee, who hated any Liberal it was his misfortune to see. So because it was fun, he loaded his gun, and shot god-fearing Christians with glee.
Although Congress's unconstitutional Patriot Acts I&II, address the fact that these laws would be needed to protect Americans on American soil, it doesn't seem to bother them when random acts of violence by right wing zealots of extreme fundamentalism, murder American Citizen Christians of the Liberal persuasion.
What's the deal Mr. Conyers? Were these anti-terrorism laws written in such a way that right wing ideologues can randomly kill Liberal minded citizens without being charged as terrorists?
What is the difference between attempting suicide by cop after killing and terrorizing a congregation of Christian liberals in Tenessee, and a suicide bomber who straps a bomb to his ass in the middle of Baghdad?
Answer: Absolutely nothing.
Prosecute this hate crime for the terrorist act it truly was, BEFORE Blackwater jumps on the "but everyone's doing it" bandwagon.
Killing liberals isn't a terrorist act, but environmentalists protesting outside the homes of Corporate CEO's is?
Prove to these rabid extreme fundamentalist terrorists that they've been following a false prophet, through impeachment, or the blood of their next Christian victims will be on your shoulders.
You didn't actually think they would stop at Muslims...did you?
I read about that incident, Mark!
What a horrific incident! But there have been other such random incidents. And, our own Frosted Flake was the victim of such a hate crime!
It seems Bush has empowered just about everyone. Corporations! Cops! Prisons! Immigrant Camps! And, now, individuals!
What an attrocious nation we have become!
Domestic terrorism is apparently a series of
"unrelated incidents" if they're committed by right-wing nuts and if they attack DFH's, or as long as they're not "Muslims".
When people like the right-wing pundits continue to spew their hate-filled rhetoric they inflame and incite their listeners daily with right wing talking points that make the talker and the listener seem like pathetic powerless persecuted "victims" of the "liburals"--even though the right-wingers have essentially been in control of all three branches of the government for the last eight years and at least one to two of the branches for the last many years--these incidents are always a possibility.
But inciting violence only seems to be against the law if it's done by someone other than a right-wing government or media type. They've gotten free passes for talk about assassinating leaders, "liburals", and just about anyone who doesn't agree with them. But, after all, "it's just 'showbiz'", right? They don't actually mean that stuff they spew do they? They certainly can't help it if someone who hears them talk about doing violence actually decides to follow their advice, can they?
Oh, but Impeachment is so "Inconvenient" at this time....
...just as it has been for the last two years, when the Democrats could have shown some spine and based on their election mandate--could have demanded accountability and enforced consequences for law breaking. Instead, they seem to have joined in on the lawbreaking themselves.

The only way to stop America's politicians from screwing us into the ground, is to eliminate them from the equation.
In 2006, we eliminated the GOP's "permanent majority", only to be undermined by the sleeper cells of fascism within the Democratic Party. As a person who was once recruited to be a sleeper cell within the "party", I call them as I see them.
Why else do you think Bush warned us about sleeper cells? He knew they'd been recruiting republicans in Democrat clothing for years, and like the good little sociopath he is, he used his knowledge of GOP tactics to look America in the eye as he warned us about subversives.
Nancy Pelosi is a wannabe Donald Trump, who understands that the biggest impediment to her dream of ascending to the ranks of robber barons, is the individual rights clause in the Constitution, which makes it illegal for her to steal waterfront development property in San Francisco. IMO, our rights are an impediment to her dream of real estate riches.
This doesn't only go for Nancy either. John Conyers lives in a state with a massive amount of waterfront property, and one of the highest rates of foreclosure in the nation. Coincidence? I think not.
Think globally, act locally. Fascist America and America's blossoming eco-tourism market share the same goals.
The problem I've run into is, the lawyers who should be presenting the winning argument, are allowing it to continue so as to maximize their own investment potential. In my situation, it's the effort to create the wonderfully exclusive Bob Marshall Wilderness Park in the NorthEastern woods. This "park" is to extend from the banks of the Great Lakes to the tip of Maine, and anyone who gets in it's way, or refuses to be depopulated, has been denied their constitutional rights.
You see, it isn't only rabid republicans who see our rights as quaint relics of the past. The whole MoveOn.org movement, controlled by Soros and Rohatyn's network of fascist wannabe eco-realtors, should be considered like minded individuals with the worst of the Bushies.
Don't believe me? Ask anyone with the misfortune to own property in an up and coming environmentally sensitive area, who also happens to receive a disability check. If the disabled individual is victim class, there isn't a lawyer in America who will fight for them, and my uneducated efforts to help, always result in increased pressure on the victim.
I wrote about Missy Horton, who was jailed for thirty days for no apparent reason. She's out of jail, the county was ordered to give her back the disability money they illegally took, but the lady she was buying her house from died after she made payments for 5 years.
When she went to the courthouse to pay her taxes, she was told that the house was now owned by the state and was ordered to move. After having her constitutional rights repeatedly denied for years, she is no longer fighting the eviction.
I only write about it now because she is safely homeless, and has nothing left to lose. My attempts to help, can't hurt her anymore.
It isn't only Missy and Frosted Flake that are being denied their constitutional rights. I believe that every victim class person in America, who happens to draw a disability check, is having their money stolen and rights denied, by educated people who think they don't deserve it.
If it's like my area, first they take your disposable income, then they boot your ass out in the street so a better class of people can take your place.
I know it's all illegal, but with wannabe eco-tourism agents and fascists running the show in Washington, their entitlement to maximize their investments, overtake our right to live unmolested.
Eminent domain is the tool they use to take the property of people with societal capital. The rest of us are used as job security for the prison industrial complex.
Maybe Cindy can look into Old Nance's husband and his waterfront investment scam. If she's done to her neighborhood, what's she's done to America, evidence of their local crimes shouldn't be hard to find.
The first step in true accountability, involves the removal of Little Georgie's sleeper cells. Replacing Nancy with Cindy Sheehan would be a great first step.
Note to Ms. Pelosi: You Have NOT Healed the Country
it is still even more divided as the people who gave the Democrats a majority in 2006 have become increasingly angry, disgusted and outraged by your lack of oversight over an Executive who is in constant violation of the Constitution.
Speaker Pelosi: IT IS NOT YOUR JOB TO "HEAL" THE COUNTRY. IT IS YOUR JOB TO: 1. PROVIDE OVERSIGHT OVER THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH. 2. UPHOLD AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES. BTW: Bipartisanship take TWO groups of people willing to compromise for the greater good. For the last two years, the only "compromises" have come from you and your party--not from the Republicans, who must be laughing at your gullibility and reveling in the ease with which they can manipulate you & your party each and every day.
If you wish to be a healer of the American people, Madame Speaker, please apply for the position of Surgeon General. If you wish to be a diplomat, Madame Speaker, please resign IMMEDIATELY and seek out work in the State Department or the United Nations, where you can "heal the divides" between people. Leave the tough job of restoration of the balance of powers and providing checks and balances to someone who actually has the Professionalism, Courage, Strength and determination to do so.
Furthermore, Ms. Pelosi, as a woman, I had hoped that the first woman in the position of Speaker of the House would show the necessary Professionalism, courage, strength and determination that had been lacking in many of her pedecessors--instead, I see a twittering, bubbly Sugar Plum Fairy, sprinkling sparkling "bipartisan" flakes on the heads of an incredulous Congress & at the same time, outraging the American people, who elected you to roll up your sleeves, be a tough and determined professional, and, most importantly of all, to show some intestinal fortitude instead of capitulating repeatedly when challenged by smirking, Constitution-trampling members of the Administration and the Congress. Instead, the only ones you want to take a hard line with are your colleagues who wish to do their jobs as the Constitution designates and with the American people who expected--and deserved--far better from you than you've been willing or able to give.
In short, Madame Speaker, in your tenure as Speaker of the House, you have been an abysmal failure and a huge disappointment.
It's apparent and has been since November, 2006. that
Ms. Pelosi is more concerned for what she thinks is "good" for the country than she is her oath and the Constitution of the United States of America.
I guess her position went straight to he head and she's stuck there, while the government falls apart and the country falls apart with it.

Franklin D. Roosevelt
As Obama said, "We already have one Dr. Phil..."
We certainly don't need Dr. Pelosi skipping through Congress, gently chiding her Democratic colleagues to "make nice" with the republicans who are stabbing them in the back.
Her job isn't to make her republican colleagues "feel good". Apparently she thinks it's her job to be a doormat for the bushies.
It's obvious she has had a very false notion about her position
from the beginning.
She seems to have appointed herself an "ad hoc" mediator for the great "divide" that is so prevalent in this country, which she has botched miserably -- to the chagrin and pain of each of us. Why can't she do the job she was hired to do? Unfortunately, it's a little too late to conceive that she just might "get it."
She must be a good friend of Bush -- she seems to have that "gawdlike" quality, as well.

Been Busy. Weather is nice.
This mornings news. Rand commentary. Unusual. Because makes sense.
There is a world of difference between the military and the civil approach to any given problem. The military approach requires secrecy, letting slip those deamons that can live ONLY secretly - at first. While the civil approach requires disclosure - Proof, before punishment is applied, the intent being to kill off those deamons with the heat of the light of day...If I may put it so.
I should be granted the latitude, I think, because others take it.
Yeah, yeah, I can hear it automatically ; "If everyone behaved that way...Yada yada yada." But the point is that government CAN'T - So Rumsfeld Is. Under the civil theory of government, this should put him in jeopardy. Under the military model, he is a public benefactor. The behavioral is the same, the change is in the acceptance of it.
It boils down to, "What kind of world do you want to live in?"
Do you want to live under the law you help write and be able to see that you do? Or do you want to live in anticipation of the midnight visit Solzhenitsyn spoke of so eloquently in Gulag Archipelago? The surprise being, of course that the visit, however long anticipated, remains a surprise.

P.S. Goodling... My Goodness!
Suggestion : fire every one of the people she hired, let them compete in the restaffing process - including credit for knowing the job if they held it, but make the hiring decision anew. Moreover, vet the guys doing the hiring to make sure politics are kept far from the professional jobs at the department of justice.
Then maybe my complaint could get investigated.
Double P.S. I should point out the P.S. in this post has EVERYTHING to do with the main body of this post. These are not separate messages, they are intended to be considered together, so the reader may notice the ropelike attachment between them. It is a case of ends and means.
That RAND report is significant
If only it were required reading and reporting by every member of Congress, administration official, candidate, and news outlet. It dispels a lot of myths currently disseminated by the above.
"Current U.S. strategy against the terrorist group al Qaida has not been successful in significantly undermining the group's capabilities, according to a new RAND Corporation study issued today.
Al Qaida has been involved in more terrorist attacks since Sept. 11, 2001, than it was during its prior history and the group's attacks since then have spanned an increasingly broader range of targets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, according to researchers.
In looking at how other terrorist groups have ended, the RAND study found that most terrorist groups end either because they join the political process, or because local police and intelligence efforts arrest or kill key members. Police and intelligence agencies, rather than the military, should be the tip of the spear against al Qaida in most of the world, and the United States should abandon the use of the phrase "war on terrorism," researchers concluded.
'The United States cannot conduct an effective long-term counterterrorism campaign against al Qaida or other terrorist groups without understanding how terrorist groups end," said Seth Jones, the study's lead author and a political scientist at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. "In most cases, military force isn't the best instrument.'
The comprehensive study analyzes 648 terrorist groups that existed between 1968 and 2006, drawing from a terrorism database maintained by RAND and the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism. The most common way that terrorist groups end -- 43 percent -- was via a transition to the political process. However, the possibility of a political solution is more likely if the group has narrow goals, rather than a broad, sweeping agenda like al Qaida possesses..."
I don't think this understanding of civil vs. military effectiveness is new - I recall that I used RAND as a source when I wrote a paper on terrorism in college in the "80's, during the U.S. military involvement in Central America - in other words, members of Congress should have done their homework before throwing our military into yet another occupation. As indicated by this report, studies have been conducted at least since 1968 (and others prior, I believe); so we have a large historical backlog of evidence to draw upon. When a group has an agenda, and no political means by which to reach that agenda, sometimes that group will resort to violence. The best way to prevent that, and stop it once it starts, is through political negotiation - regardless of what Bush says.
Thank you for bringing us that report, FF.
I'd like to leave another thought...
Where have all the flowers gone?
When WILL they ever learn? Who benefits from U.S. military occupations? Why would the U.S. be so interested in using our military to suppress localized rebellions around the globe? For our "national security? I don't think so... rebellions around the world are bad for somebody's business.
Richard Perle Linked to Iraq Oil Deal
Mr. Chairman, when criminals are allowed to go unpunished, they will continue to commit crimes, and to personally profit from their continued freedom. Mr. Perle, the Iraq War “Architect” is now trying to personally profit from the death and destruction that he helped engineer while a government employee:
Except, that he apparently is guilty as charged.
Mr. Chairman, as a member of the branch of government responsible for helping Mr. implement his war of choice in Iraq--even if you personally didn't vote for the AUMF--in your position as Chairman of the Judiciary, you are ethically and morally obligated to make sure that Mr. Perle & and his former "bosses" do not personally profit off the oil paid for by the blood of the tens of thousands of people that, in large part, they are responsible for sentencing to die needlessly.
More to the Story:
Perle is trying to get in on an oil-drilling deal with Iraqi Kurds despite the administration's public opposition to such deals there:
Mr. Chairman: IMHO, This is PROOF that the Bush Administration at least partly went into Iraq so they and/or their cronies would personally profit from Iraqi oil. This is confirmation of the illegal and disgusting selling of US and Iraqi blood by the Administration in return for Iraqi oil money to profit the people who planned and implemented that war.
Mr. Chairman, isn’t this just too much—even for the current Democratic leadership to tolerate? If they have any decency at all, it will finally end their shielding of the Bush Administration from accountability. If the Speaker continues to oppose accountability, it is time for her removal as Speaker.
Which came first the chicken or . . . . .?
The Hunt Oil Company, of Texas, finalized oil contracts with the Kurds sometime back (the Iraqi government is calling them illegal). Bush is heavily tied to Hunt Oil. Perle might just be getting into the "grab" that has already been set up.
.
It could be that Bush has Perle doing the "footwork" now in order to seemingly disassociate himself with the oil deals with the Kurds, but he was very much a part of the deals from the get-go.
Yes, assuredly, the unrest in the Kirkuk region is attributable to "deals" made privately, but are now known.
Of course, when knowledge of these "deals" (The Hunt Oil Company, included) leaked out, the Bush Administration would have sought to suppress the knowledge. There are a number of articles on this subject!
Rule of thumb! Never, ever believe a word Bush has to say -- it's usually the opposite, or another fabrication of the truth -- remember, Bush, et al. are learned scholars of Rovian thought sprin.
