"Vulture Funds" Hijack Debt Relief for African Debtor Nations

Submitted by JC on February 16, 2007 - 5:36pm.

Yesterday I visited the White House with the Congressional Black Caucus and raised an issue with the president which I don't believe has gotten much attention.

You may find this hard to believe, but with all of the high profile efforts to defeat global poverty, there are actually investors out there who hijack debt relief arrangements between donor and debtor nations so they can sue the debtor nations and collect a huge profit.

These investors create so-called "vulture funds" and prey upon poor, African countries so laden with debt they are unable to invest in their own futures.   For these countries, the debt relief arrangements they reach with donor nations give them the only real shot to fight the poverty, hunger and disease afflicting their inhabitants.

These suits against debtor nations are often filed by the "vulture funds" in U.S. courts.   I believe this is something we must fight.   We should not stand idly by while these vultures rob poor, African nations the opportunity to rise up out of poverty and despair.

I expressed this yesterday with the president and spoke about this with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now this morning.

I don't think the Vulture-in-Chief gives a damn about

African debtor nations, Chairman Conyers.

Shit.

Ron, we need to start drinking heavily.

Do I get a bottle too Rusty?

I think it might be the only comfort we can find, even if it is false.

Hick-up!

Pass me an over flowing shot glass this way, pa-leeeeeese!

Alma,

You have to wait for me to come join you! ( < : )

Waitress, we need another round here,

and set up Cliff and Norm over there at the end of the bar with another round too.

Put it all on Frosty's tab.

Thanks.

Frosty, where are you?

We're all imbibing here tonight. We need you to join our "party." And, you will pick up the "tab" won't you?

Frosty probably got carded.

Tough break, Frosty, but you can be our designated driver until Election Day 2008 or Armageddon, whichever comes first.

Dang it...

You guys have all the fun while I'm sleeping. We must move the continents closer together.

On the good side, though, I'm probably the only one who woke up without a hangover. :)

Got a late start Rusty

but I'm on it. Figure if we drink enough, we can put another "SMALL BLACK" nation into debtors prison! Don't complain, at least there, those po peoples can get a bowl a day!

Realizing all of a sudden that there are Other oppressed people ,has ruined my day!
I thought that I being AMERICAN, was the only one being put down!
At least I'm not alone!

Sorry, but this is not revelationary news!

It's been going on for a long time. George H.W. Bush has been in there for a long time -- he's been traveling the world for a long time -- ever wonder why?

"Confessions of an Economic Hit Man," by John Perkins, illustrated his own personal role in economic "takeovers." How, largely, done through a guise of a company or entity, i.e., the United States National Security Agency, but "funded" and "promoted" by the World Bank or other entity (belonging to the U.S.), sought to engage impoverished nations by offering them "huge" loans to alleviate their country situations (knowing that they could never ever fulfill the payback obligations), and thereby, indebted them further, while at the same time, took over whatever "resources" that country might have had in "paybacks" -- enslaving them further to their impoverishment.

A few quotes:

"..... His job was to implement policies that promoted the interest of the U.S. corporatocracy (a coalition of government, banks, and corporations) while professing to alleviate poverty -- policies that that alienated many nations and ultimately led to September 1 and growing anti-Americanism."

More:

Perkins explains, for instance, "how he helped to implement a secret scheme that funneled billions of Saudi Arabian petrodollars back into the U.S. economy, and that further cemented the intimate relationship between the Islamic fundamentalist House of Saud and a succession of American administrations" . . . ."

At any rate, the point is that we are "filthy" in our behavior toward the poorest of nations, rendering them even poorer. Is it no wonder that we are "hated" the world over?

Linking does not work: please use: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8171.htm

Yes, I am proud to be an American, but I am no longer proud of America -- we have become a "monster" -- we "prey" on the most down-trodden of nations in the most insidious ways possible and practically "cripple" those nations who are struggling already and the least able to "defend" themselves. American international policy: "KICK 'EM WHEN THEY'RE DOWN."

We have become a "sick" nation and we may ultimately pay the price for "total lack of concern for the peoples of the world."

Obviously, I am on a rant!

From once we could pride ourselves in our America -- our benevolence, our leadership in this world, we have become a nation of "capitalism gone amuck." As it now stands, we have shown ourselves to the world that we are a nation lacking in morality and depraved in our purposes.

Is there any way on this earth that we can turn this around and get back to "America?"

I'm glad you mentioned Perkins

"Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" came to my mind, as well, while I was listening this morning.

Something has to be done about this corruption of global proportions.

Scalping...

In my city you can be arrested for selling tickets to the Sonics, Mariners, or Seahawks above the original price. Scalping is against the law in my America.

I Heard the Program this Morning, Congressman

I appreciate you taking the time to do the interview, and for taking up this issue with Bush, as I posted in the last thread this morning.

As noted by Palast, Singer was a top campaign contributer to Bush; and as noted by you, if Bush were sincere about his statements regarding debt relief, he would publicly make note of the fact that he has power of comity.

While vulture funds are not "news" to those of us in the progressive community, I do think that the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee calling Bush on it is news.

Bush's entire approach to foreign policy is reprehensible.
And the OVP considers itself so outside of any oversight, I wonder how members of Congress intend to address that, as well.

I really hope that one day soon, three fourths of the Senate does some serious soul-searching.

SHAME ON YOU!

Congressman,
I came here months ago because I believed in the rule of Congressional Law and Oversight. I was drawn here by your basement hearings. By your reports on the illegal activities that took us into this war.

AND NOW WHAT?(!)

Now that you are in the position to actually do something you don't want to do it?

I guess that means you support:

~ Wars based on fabricated evidence.
~ Felonious statements made to Joint Sessions of Congress.
~ Wiretapping U.S. citizen's phone conversations without warrants.
~ Opening U.S. citizens private mail.
~ Tracking U.S. citizen's E-mail activity.
~ Outing a CIA agent.
~ Kidnapping and rendition.
~ Human trafficking in the name of war.
~ Torture.
~ Ignoring International agreements and treaties.
~ Attempts to subvert Congress through signing statements.
~ Presidential violations of Oath.
~ Signing unconstitutional Bills into law.

Am I out of line here?
I'm sorry if I seem to be, but I am merely taking you to task.

PROVE ME WRONG, PLEASE!

Now that you have the job, DO IT!

The Bush Administration is an obscenity,

Chairman Conyers. They are criminals and traitors, by every standard of law and treason ever established.

Bush says he sleeps well at night.

Do you?

Appalling!

The thought of sleazy vultures preying on poor African counties is appalling!

The thought of BushCo preying on oil rich Middle East countries is appalling!

The thought of Big Oil companies preying on energy dependent consumers is appalling!

The thought of the Military Industrial complex preying on American taxpayers is appalling!

The thought of Congress appropriating funds for BushCo,s war budgets is appalling!

The thought of the Internal Revenue Service preying on the American middle class is appalling!

If Congress doesn't take corrective actions - I,m going to file an itemized, but "non-binding" 1040.

BushCo and his kind can (_x_)

Love it,

We Must Continue Forward, & Not be Disheartened by Setbacks

I,ve been in a philosophical mood this morning. So, if you're not in the mood, please feel free to skip over this essay.

I,ve been feeling a lot of frustration with Congress in general and certain congress people in particular. So, I,ve found that when I get to that point of discouragement and frustration, it helps me to try to regain some perspective. FWIW, here are some of my thoughts, to be accepted, rejected, as each person sees fit:

I am as impatient as the next progressive to clean out the White House ASAP; to restore democracy and the rule of law to our government; to stop the torture sanctioned by our government; to replace Bush,s warmongering with world-class diplomacy; to fix the economy-decreasing the debt and stopping the disappearance of the middle class; etc, etc, etc. So much needs to be done.

Yet in the cold light of day, it must be apparent that the neocons may be down, but they are by no means out. They will continue to fight back, even more fiercely and savagely as they sense they may be losing some of their power. The will not "go gently into this good night", no matter how much we wish it to be so.

I want the troops out of Iraq immediately. As a military mom, there are times I feel so overwhelmed with grief when I hear reports of yet another death, or deaths, in Iraq that I want to scream at the warmongers. Yet I know we,ve only begun to make headway on putting a brake on Bush,s hellish war in Iraq. To say that I often get discouraged is the understatement of the decade.

So what are we to do at this point? I think the only thing we can do is to continue to plow forward, understanding that success will be accomplished if we don,t waver--but not as quickly as we hope it will. IMHO, there is a serious challenge ahead for progressives-the challenge is to keep moving forward, even if progress is in centimeters rather than in miles. I,ve been right there ranting with the best of them when I,ve seen Congress cave to BushCo when they should have stood firm. Yet, I understand logically that it took the neocons years to get their plans to the point that their boy king could begin to enact them. It took Murdoch years to build up his propaganda empire, slowly and methodically buying up the "liberal" & "objective" media, while the liberals watchdogs were apparently "out to lunch" during the media coup.

The republicans may be out of the majority in the house, and basically tied for power in the Senate-yet like a child who knows that they can gain a lot of ground by throwing tantrums, they will indeed continue to throw tantrums, hoping they can wear down the opposition, get their fellow tantrum throwers on board, and get their way by throwing major public tantrums.

We need to persevere, to continue to fight the good fight, even when it looks like we,re losing ground. We need to keep in constant contact with our Congress people & let them know when we support them or when we feel they need to be more aggressive in their opposition. Why? The stakes are too high not to. The cost of losing the fight is unthinkable. I guess what I,m trying to tell myself is: It,s ok to be discouraged at times, but it,s not okay to give up.

Wurra - Wurra - what to do - ? ? ?

I just LOVE "Bankers' Arithmetic." There is the Nation that borrowed eight billion dollars fifty years ago, and having repaid forty-one billion dollars, still owes forty-two billion!!! And, when they decided to repudiate the debt, the bankers (IMF - WB) had heart failure!

Isn't there something WORNG with that??

Now is the time to bite the bullet and start to listen to the people who are interested in saving THE WORLD - not just the Banker$ - from the consequences of the greed of a few. It is quite true, Perkins delineated what is much of the problem, but what we need are solutions.

Only one organization in the World has definitive ANSWERS to the bind the entire Earth is in, and since it is squarely against the Multinationals, Bankers, Cartels, and Megafinanciers who own the world's political bodies, no-one seems to be willing to listen to it.

That is the LaRouche Organization.

Yes, Lyndon Hermille LaRouche is a supreme egotist. Yes, he has a number of cockamamie ideas, among which is the denial that there is any limit to growth; HOWEVER; his desire to return the US to its Constitution, America to the American System, and the World to the Bretton Woods "Fixed Exchange" policies are the ONLY viable ideas in a World gone insane with gambling fever.

Love him or hate him, the man is the SOLE Economist in the World whose Economic forecasts have been one hundred per cent correct! If you have a neighbor who is an arsonist, and another who is a fireman, which will you trust to house-sit for you? LaRouche has fought a long battle against the forces of Economic Fascism that have infested the world since the twenties, and possibly before. He was railroaded into prison in Virginia on the basis of false charges that had already been dismissed in Massachusetts as fraudulent, because he had two heavy hitting enemies named GHW Bu$h and Heinrich Kissinger. He was released from prison because multitudes of international figures demanded that release. Ramsey Clark, a former Attorney General of the US said that the charges against LaRouche were "The greatest Fraud on the Court" he had ever witnessed. HOWEVER; the mere fact that LaRouche had some jail time makes people think he is a crook, while the greatest criminals of our time, Nixon, Bu$h I & II, Cheney, Rumsfeld - spent NO TIME in Prison AT ALL!

LaRouche has a large corps of loyalists who fervently believe he walks on water. I am not one, although I do recognize that in Economics and practical politics he is probably the sanest voice in a wilderness otherwise composed of a cacophony of noise ranging from vicious to stupid.

It is time to start listening to him; his policies are at least aimed in the right direction, something which cannot be said of Greenspan, Bernanke, Bu$h, or BlIAR.

Had we listened to him we would never have been involved in Viet Nam or Iraq, and the World would have been a much safer place. It is, I think, high time that we pay attention to what the man has to say.

We are in a hole. All Bu$h can do is ask for more shovels, while LaRouche offers a rope. Think about it - and then go to www.larouchepub.com and see what he has to say. You may be impressed. Remember, not EVERYTHING the man says is gospel, but he certainly has a higher truth coefficient than any other economist out there, besides being more learned in Ancient and Modern History and Mathematics than many professors of the subjects, and certainly far more cognizant of political science than most politicos. The only reason he was never elected President is that he was never willing to sell himself to enough financiers to get the money to buy the election. He is a TRUE Democrat, which many "Democrats" are not, being, with malice aforethought, Republicans in a Donkey suit (I speak, of course, of the DLC, which is a gang of traitors to the FDR ideals.)

But, I repeat, LOOK at what LaRouche has to say; at least he has a program to save the world from the greedheads, which no-one else has, and unless we accept it, or something very like it, there is little hope for the world to escape the looming catastrophe.

LaRouche understands money.

Before MoveOn.org shut down actionforum and turned into a cash machine for the middle right DLC powermongers, a man called Eric Mercier posted many articles about the economically driven, never ending war of depopulation. Most of which were written by Lyndon LaRouche.

Without an economically driven form of dissent, the investor class of America will continue to hide behind the facade of plausible deniability. The judgmental Yuppie scum of America, need to be forced to acknowledge that their investment cash is being used to oppress and kill brown people all over the world.

Until we force them to acknowledge their knowing complicity, they will continue to pass judgment on others, as they play the stupid card. Without a draft, why should they care if the war doesn't end?

Do a Google search for Eric Mercier, regulateur(sp?), France. Hopefully they haven't been totally deleted yet by the Government propaganda control machine.

This war is about realigning the finances of the world with no regard for the continued existence of America. Coincidentally, these genocidal wars will be focused on depopulating areas that promote the browning of humanity.

The stalemate in Iraq is DESIGNED to bankrupt the USA, or lead to world conquest. Look at the activity by The NYSE Group. With Goldman Sachs owning about 15% of the NYSE Group, and Goldman Sachs in charge of the treasury, White House staff, and the GOP propaganda machine, the NYSE Group will soon allow American investors to continue making money in the world markets as their investments cause the eventual destruction of the concept of Democracy.

Think about it in simpler terms. How many people of color are there in the world? How many Caucasians? If a world Democracy is established, who would win?

The concept of Democracy being spread throughout the world, scares the hell out of the robber barons. Why? There are a helluva lot more poor people than rich people. The Democracy BushCo promotes is so arbitrary and capricious, the only people who like it are his investors.

Since rich people use thousands of times more natural resources daily, than many of us use over our lifetime. Eliminating 20,000 rich people would do far more ecological good than eliminating 20,000,000 brown people. How would this affect global warming?

But the rich must do everything in their power to maintain their lifestyle. Wars of depopulation and gentrification are openly discussed in many colleges.

As investor class Americans of the GOP persuasion canabalize the poor of the world, they seem to forget that America is the most heavily leveraged nation in the world.

By the time they're done, they'll each own a nation of brown people(cheap human capital), as China calls in America's debt.

Why should BushCo care? The NYSE Group will ensure their legacy status for centuries to come.

This is an "us against them" scenario. These people never got over FDR. They won't be happy until 3 generations of Americans are living in the same apartment again, while being pidgeonholed into giving their money to the company store.

Follow the money. It's always about money. This is America.

LaRouche deserves a second or third look.

Town Hall Meeting

What: Town Hall Meeting
Where Central United Methodist Church on Woodward at Adams
When Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1pm

What a great event yesterday! JC, you looked well and rested.

I can report that the people are ready to take back what was taken from them and continues to be taken from them. They are tired of the hypocrisy, of funding and illegal immoral war, and not giving a damn about the people. Thousands of empty homes owned by the city with thousands of homeless walking the streets. Hundreds of sick stay home or stand in long lines at the hospital emergency facilities while hospital beds remain unfilled. Local schools are closing their doors while those that stay open are overcrowded. Jobs are leaving as they outsourced and Michigan's economy contracts. The State is facing a $3.5 billion dollar deficit that cannot be covered, unless structural changes are made. Companies are eliminating pension plans, changing pension retirement formula calculations, eliminating employee savings plans, and reducing health insurance benefits while raising costs. There are tens of thousands of people underemployed. There were 1000 people recently lined up to apply for a handful of near minimum wage jobs at a Walmart Super Store.

Look folks, Michigan is bleeding and it is only predicted to get worse. Currently Michigan is ranked dead last among states in the latest index of economic momentum (quarterly changes in personal income, employment, and population). Michigan has lost 246,000, or one in four, manufacturing jobs since 2000 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). As news goes, it gets even worse, because recent history has shown that Michigan is usually the first state to become effected by economic trends. This does not bode well for the rest of the nation.

Most recently, Daimler-Chrysler has announced that it wants to divest itself of the US Chrysler business and concentrate on German Mercedes-Benz business. Thus they have entered into negotiations with GM to sell that business. Looks to me like the German's are fed up with the US.

We need to take our country back! I say not one red cent needs to go to fund this hypocritical, illegal, immoral war; not one red cent needs to go overseas, while people at home are left homeless; not one red cent needs to buy more bombs that kill and maim Iraqi children and families: not one red cent. Not my money. I will not endorse that check. Those monies are needed here at home. Those monies are needed now.

We need to support our troops and bring them home. We need to bring them home alive. I will not pay one dime to send more boys (and girls) over to Iraq when their job is done. They have no more business there, placing them in harms way is reckless and grossly negligent.

Thank you JC for making my day. Godspeed.

Thank You For Town Hall Updates

We need more citizens like you and more Congress people like Rep. Conyers.

It,s good to know that the Congressman is working diligently for us-but we all know he can,t do it all alone: Conyers and the Impeachment Table

I agree with your analysis that Michigan,s economic woes are a harbinger of economic troubles that will "trickle down" to the rest of the country. As more unionized workers jobs are lost and outsourced, the jobs that are left for the average, middle class worker will be of lower pay and less (to no) benefits. As Henry Ford,s revolutionary $5 Dollar Day Pay attracted workers to MI from around the country (and the world) and contributed to the rise of the middle class, the decline of the auto industry, along with the loss of all the benefits that were accrued by the workers over the years-will have a reverse effect on the middle class.

Largely unnoticed by most average Americans, business oriented groups have worked over the last few decades to counter the gains made by middle class workers during the years since Fords instituting the $5 a day. One such group is the
Business Roundtable How did such organizations begin the reversal of the gains previously made by the working class?:

This 1994 Description of - "The Most Powerful Lobby" gives some insight into how the newest war against American workers was begun and has been waged over recent years:

"…It played a key role in defeating an anti-trust bill in 1975 and a Ralph Nader plan for a Consumer Protection Agency in 1977. And it helped dilute the Humphrey-Hawkins full employment bill…

"…But the Roundtables most significant victory was in blocking labor law reform…The defeat. ..signaled the end of New Deal-style pluralism in Washington. From then on, almost every major government economic initiative bore the distinct mark of the Roundtable. In fiscal policy, for example, the Roundtable was responsible for broadening Reagans tax cut plan to include a sharp reduction in corporate taxes.

"…The Roundtable defined the reach of trade policy, which, it argued, should be focused on opening foreign markets to American trade and investment but not on regulating either foreign investment in the United States or American overseas investment. The Omnibus Trade Act of 1988 identified with the Democratic Congress in fact reflected most closely the thinking of the Business Round-table. In 1990, the Roundtable urged George Bush to initiate a free trade agreement with Mexico. Last year, the Roundtable lobbied for NAFTA and against any strong side agreements on labor and the environment. It provided the money and leadership for the main pro-NAFITA lobby, USA*NAFTA [sic].

"The Roundtable also continued to block economic reform efforts. During the Reagan and Bush years, it successfully opposed changes in corporate governance that would have made boards of directors and CEOs more accountable to stockholders…Last year, the Roundtable got Clinton to water down his plan to impose penalties on excessive executive salaries."

Sadly, too many Americans spend far too little time informing themselves on matters that are actually life and death issues that affect them personally-the news is just oh so boring-it,s so much more fun to watch people make fools of themselves on the latest reality show. And many of the people who do choose to watch or listen to any news, choose to be brainwashed by the rightwing "unfair and unbalanced" white house-approved propaganda news programs.

The price we pay for such laziness in the citizens of a democracy? Pick up the paper and read about the latest job losses; the latest war mongering; the latest fiscal crisis; the latest increase in crime; and the latest disappearance of tons of American tax money in foreign countries while the government tells us it can,t afford to fulfill its obligations to the taxpaying citizens. Read about the latest troop deaths in Iraq, and how even the situation in Afghanistan has worsened because an incompetent Administration continues to blunder about with no oversight from a politically paralyzed, navel-gazing Senate.

Oh, and while the Senate is too spineless to even give a richly deserved stern reprimand to the king, this outrage has been allowed to occur--something which should have resulted in 535 congress people on the White House steps, demanding immediate action: SHAME: Soldiers Face Neglect, Frustration At Army,s Top Medical Facility BTW, I personally saw a standard accommodatation at a naval medical facility-it was outdated, dismal, depressing & could have been much cleaner.

Excuses - Every one's got one...

Even the Congressman.

Sorry unspun,
I do not share in the sentiments about the Congressman as expressed in the article Conyers and the Impeachment Table. While he did work hard in 2005-2006, he seems to have forgone that work in favor of the low road. I can not endorse meaningless platitudes about a man who's done the work, invested the time, put so much effort into advancing Impeachment on the stage where it should be right now, that I am at a loss for words as to why and to whom he is choosing to placate.

Some may say he is trying. What is trying but a way to fail with honor?

I am at my wits end as to why he refuses to move forward with the case. Either he has sold out or is being forced into submission. A real patriot stands on principle, not with a majority who complains about a need to "get along". Especially when this "get along" comes at the expense of our Democracy, Constitution, and Governmental structure.

Who exactly is it, that the Congressman suggest we fire in 2008?

Certainly ISN'T the President. Bush isn't up for a re-election in 2008.

The Congressman? Is he planning to run again in 2008? He IS up for re-election.

I don't mean to "make waves" here. But I do, I must state it unequivocally:
Impeachment is Constitutional. It is NOT on or off the table. It comes WITH the table. The Congressman nor the Speaker can simply do a "Bush" and dismiss parts of the Constitution because it pleases them. Then they are no better than the traitorous subvert himself, George W. Bush.

It is the Congressman who's feet Impeachment rests at.

We here and millions more around the U.S.A. are doing our part. Cities and towns have passed resolutions calling for the Impeachment of the President. As is, the evidence is strong enough.

Five States have resolutions either in debate or entering their floors for debate concerning Impeachment.

At no other time has this Nation been in favor for Impeachment of a President than they are now. And yet, to the Congressman, it's not good enough.

In other words, We the People don't matter.

UNACCEPTABLE!

We the People are working toward Impeachment and the Congressman continues to talk about against it. It would be nice if we were talking about what the Congressman were doing about Impeachment. NO? After all, he's already made the case.

====================================================
You aren't defending, protecting, preserving the Constitution of the USA
When you allow the usurpations of the Constitutional laws of the USA.

I'm with you Max

And I'm so tired of this crap, I'm ready to blow. What does it take to get people to do their jobs nowdays?

Maybe all of the unemployed should start running for Congress. I'm sure they've had enough of the BS too.

The Congress isn't going to be able to get our kids home until we get a new Pres., and VP. I think they are counting on winning more seats in the next election than they are going to get.

If Bush/Cheney aren't removed the people aren't going to be voting Dem. They will be voting for third party candidates. If Hillary ends up the nominee, then Nader is definitly going to be a spoiler again, and their waiting will be for naught. I think the Dems are starting to live in the same unreal world that Bush lives in.

Totally disgusted. Can anybody tell?

Is disgust an adequate word?

So, 34 rotten Repugs (7 didn't show up, McCain included) say "NO" -- now even a debate on Iraq on a non-binding resolution is off the table! 34 rotten Repugs who DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR SOLDIERS! And, 34 rotten Repugs who have probably "paved" the way to Iran for BushCo.

Meanwhile, back at the "ranch":

" . . . Already, troops of the Army's 82nd Airborne have arrived in Iraq. Another brigade is in Kuwait, in final training before proceeding to Iraq. Three more brigades are ticketed for the Baghdad area, one each in March, April and May.

In addition, the Pentagon is sending two Marine battalions to Anbar province in the western part of the country, the heart of the Sunni insurgency. . . ."*

Did the Decider foresee the outcome? Hell no, he's been going full steam ahead anyway -- he ain't stopping either.

So, where does this all leave "We the People?" Well, there are State impeachment means -- but that WOULD take too much time in order to curtail the "surge" now. So, I guess we are simply to assume that it will all go down as planned, since there is no seeming means of preventing more "fodder" for this utter disaster in Iraq?

The wishes of the populace have virtually no significance! So, disgusting isn't a strong enough word! Contempt is what I feel. Contempt for all the standing down to this despicable, cut-throat, heartless, nefarious Administration.

*Senate Gridlocks

State Impeachment; Personal Impeachment -- the way to do it!

Impeach!

You know

I'm the master of cynical understatement Tahoe. I'm so depressed and pissed over the situation now that I can hardly function.

I guess The Constitution is just an old piece of paper to most of our elected officials.

That's O.K., Alma, I know how you feel and I know what you

really think, but I can't repeat it here! (<:)

tahoe

I call the Senate the MASTER-debaters.

Only they can have a debate on whether to debate about the debate of a non-binding resolution. Only to be debated on further, at a later scheduled debate to be held concerning the original debate. True masters, NO?

True Masters, all right!

Masters at ne'er-do-well! At our expense!!!!

Spanking the Birthplace of Union America.

Flint, Michigan was a major national player in the creation of Union America. It makes sense that the unAmerican forces of Fascism would seek a symbolic victory against the descendants of these Union rebels.

In their mind, attacking the biggest man in the Union room, the United Autoworkers, will intimidate the weaker Unions into subservience. I've been to prison, this is a common practice when you go to a new prison. When you think like a criminal, the actions of BushCo are obvious.

Too bad the public employee union do nothing. When it comes time to vote for or against the existence of public unions, the people from places like Michigan, will exact their revenge.

Unless "we the people" create a Party capable of coalescing the concerns of the public AND private sectors, the eventual elimination of public unions is assured.

And Michigan will be one of the first to vote against them. "When they came for us, the public unions did nothing..."

Why should they be the only ones pissed off?

We can have perpetual war, or public unions. America can't afford both.

This Criminal Presidency Must End

The current occupant of the White House claims Iraq is the main battleground in the war on terror. That is a despicable lie. Our troops are not fighting terrorists in Iraq, they are dead men walking in a bloody Muslim civil war. They cannot fight roadside bombs, they cannot defend America by getting blown up in unarmored Humvees, they cannot defeat multiple insurgent groups and shadowy militias when it is impossible to identify their members or determine where they will strike next.

Bush,s lies sent our soldiers into this cauldron of barbarity, and now he is sending more. This escalation is not a policy, it is a temper tantrum, an exhibition of juvenile defiance by a 60-year-old adolescent who has had his ass kissed all his life and has never been held accountable for any of his reckless blunders. A competent American president would have destroyed al Qaeda by now, stabilized Afghanistan, and forged from the world,s sympathy after 9/11 an era of global unity.

But we do not have a competent American president, we have a smirking travesty of a president. Bush,s criminal incompetence has killed more than 3,000 of our soldiers, has wounded and maimed more than 20,000 of them, and has torched $400 billion of our taxpayer dollars to ashes in that wasteland of Sunni-Shi,a hatred. After four gruesome years, what has Bush,s squandering of young lives and national treasure in Iraq gotten us? A besieged Green Zone in Baghdad and a shattered Army, that,s what it,s gotten us. What has it gotten Iraqis? Torture chambers. Death squads. Executions. Endless chaos. Endless fear. Endless death.

Never in the history of American warfare has there been such a degrading fiasco as this bloodbath in Iraq. Never in the span of 43 American presidencies has there been such a shameful spectacle of a commander-in-chief such as George W. Bush. Never in more than two-centuries of American politics have so many pathological liars, moral cowards, brazen hypocrites, and brutally ignorant partisan hacks created such a hellish mess of corruption, squalor, and betrayal.

Bush has been an imminent threat to America ever since the Republican Supreme Court handed him the keys to the White House in 2001. He is a clear and present danger, he is a walking, talking, smirking mushroom cloud over every American city. It,s time for regime change here, Congress. It,s long past time. It,s time for every one of us to take action. We are the heirs of Washington and Jefferson and Lincoln, we are Americans, and it,s time we all started defending the democracy they gave us instead of watching silently while an alcoholic from Texas destroys it.

Write a letter to the editor asking other Americans to demand Impeachment hearings.

Call your representative in Congress and demand Impeachment hearings.

Call Chairman Conyers and demand Impeachment hearings.

Call Speaker Pelosi and demand Impeachment hearings.

Do it. Then do it again. Don,t stop doing it until Impeachment hearings begin.

So I tell them to Impeach

have those waterheads in Congress and the Senate been smoking too much POT? It seems so because as I recall each and everyone of them has received at least a million letters demanding IMPEACHMENT!!!

It seems that they are ALL suffering from short term memory loss. There can be no other explanation!

I like your method better than mine though, my approach would be more biblical in nature , something like ,"An eye ,for an eye " Georgy being a staunchly religious man understands!

Call, Fax and Write, Call, Fax, Write, Call, Fax, Write

and when you've done that, do it again & again. I agree Rusty, we have to make our voices heard. Our leaders have been asleep at the wheel far too long. We're headed for a monumental crash & it's up to us to wake them up or to change all the drivers.

I also would suggest joining the local Progressive Democratic Groups, attending the meetings--and then organizing personal visits to Senators' and Congress members offices to make them understand that we have had enough.

America Can't Wait Until 2008 because 2008 Will Be Too Late. Impeach now to save America.

I heard a story the other day - - -

A farmer in Louisiana witnessed the crash of a huge aircraft in his south forty, so he took his back hoe out and buried all the dead. In a matter of hours, a large contingent of federal cops arrived, and wanted to know what happened to Air Force One. "Way - ull," the farmer said. "Ever'body wuz dead, so I buried 'em all."

"All? The President, too? He was dead?"

"Way-ull, he kep' sayin' as how he wuz not dead, but hell, y'awl know whut a liar he wuz!"

(We needed a bit of comic relief)

Thank You!

I know I needed a bit of comic relief.

Thanks, but

Short of divine intervention, poetic justice, or Karma - I think the world is screwed!

And, for now, there's more bad news for the opposition party. Read all about it.

Bringing the troops home

When asked what should Congress do now that the Democrats have the majority, people usually say, impeachment hearing, end the war, save the environment, universal health care, education, women's rights, LGBT rights, and a whole host of others.

It is generally agreed that the November 2006 election was a referendum on ending the war in Iraq and bring the troops home. Now going against all advice, demands, and suggestions from generals, the Iraq Study Group, the recently released NIE, and We the People; Bush is moving more American military forces into positions which, upon command, can strike Iran within minutes and hours.

The original framers of our Constitution left congress with very little say in, How to fight war and very little say in foreign diplomatic relations. There was an assumption that American Forces would never be used upon foreign soil. Needless to say, the only way Congress can compel Bush to bring home the troops is by stopping funds or by removing Bush from office.

Having the troops in the field and impeaching Bush sets the Democrats into a precarious position. Should any number of unpredictable disasters or battlefield losses occur while Bush and Cheney are being impeached, the Repugs will immediately declare the Dems at fault because the President was distracted and the troops were demoralized because their leader was under assault from those nasty liberals at home.

This leaves only one other option, stopping funds. Yes the GOP can scream in the media, you don't support the troops, but frankly, I think it is a battle they can win in the media. The great thing about stopping the funding is what the House has to do to stop the funding. Do they need a resolution pulling back funds? No, all they need to do is......wait for it......nothing!

The current allocation will run out and there is nothing the Senate or the President can do to put an appropriations bill into the House. The House can block anything the Senate or Bush want to do by doing nothing and acting like the GOP did when they had control of the House. (Thanks Constant and Thanks again)

However, this abused-in-chief may (against the will of practically the entire planet) decide that Iran (after a night of partying with Gannon and/or Condi) that attacking Iran would be fun to watch on his TV (much better then watching John Wayne in "The Green Berets). So maybe they should tell him anything that stupid and impeachment is back on the table. Only by putting a personal consequence in front of these two sociopaths, will they feel compelled not to attack Iran.

The top story New Iraq Oil Law to Open Iraq's Oil Reserves to Western Companies

snip:
The Iraqi blogger Raed Jarrar has obtained a copy of the proposed oil law and has just translated it into English. He discusses the new law with Antonia Juhasz, author of "The Bush Agenda: Invading the World One Economy at a Time."
end snip

There are website addresses available in the story, where you can download the translation of the law.

This law is not yet in effect, but is planned to come to the Iraqi parliament. It seems that this law does not benefit the Iraqi people, but western-controlled oil companies (NO SURPRISE!).

Please, check out the story.

Also, the second story on Democracy Now today deals with vulture funds.

The third story deals with global surveillance.

Oops, we shouldn't call it that. People might get the wrong impression.
It's a freedom agenda, not an OIL agenda.

But, but, but...
I thought it was a war on of terror. Ya know, fightin' 'em there so as to not fight 'em here. 'Cuz pre-emptivly engaging them there prevents their will to retaliate and fight us here, right? After all, we don't want to embolden the enemy any.

Thanks feline,

Quick Summary

New law removes the old system and sets up a new Federal Oil and Gas Council. Seats will be given to....wait for it....Exxon and other oilmen which will have ultimate contract approval.

AMY GOODMAN: And explain what it says, now that you,ve finished translating it.

RAED JARRAR: It said so many things. I don,t think we can summarize it this short, because it,s a very long document, around thirty pages. But majorly, there are three major points that I think we should talk about. Financially, it legalizes very unfair types of contracts that will put Iraq in very long-term contracts that can go up to thirty-five years and cause the loss of hundreds of billions of dollars from Iraqis for no cause.

And the second point is concerning Iraq's sovereignty. Iraq will not be capable of controlling the levels -- the limits of production, which means that Iraq cannot be a part of OPEC anymore. And Iraq will have this very complicated institution called the Federal Oil and Gas Council, that will have representatives from the foreign oil companies on the board of it, so representatives from, let,s say, ExxonMobil and Shell and British Petroleum will be on the federal board of Iraq approving their own contracts.

And the third point is the point about keeping Iraq,s unity. The law is seen by many Iraqi analysts as a separation for Iraq fund. The law will authorize all of the regional and small provinces, authorities. It will give them the final say to deal with the oil, instead of giving this final say to central federal government, so it will open the doors for splitting Iraq into three regions or even maybe three states in the very near future.

Reedy, are we surprised? How despicable!

We have the Iraqis at a total disadvantage now, so now the time is "ripe" to move in and do what we set out to do in the first place. So, essentially, Iraq has lost of control of it's natural resources -- their "hope." It has been basically "stolen" from them. What right do we have or did we ever have? And, I suppose, this will all go down without repercussions? If BushCo attacks Iran, I think the Middle East countries might "join" together and we may become the subjects of "attack."

This is ALL part of the "vulture" culture!

Bush knows all about it, though he feigned to know nothing about it, when confronted by Conyers. HE KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT -- "Poppy" has been in there a long time working on it all.

Feline, it's affirmation of what we have known

right down the line. Are we surprised?

Surprise ?

Not when there is a smoking gun in just about every direction you can point. It is getting to be there are so many of them people are starting to think of smoking guns the way they think of flowers. Something that pops out of the ground, sorta stands there, makes a great decoration. Nothing to get upset about. Impeachment is off the table.

Another thing off the table is my hotmail account. I wrote MSN. Explained that making me enter random letters in a box to use the reply all function was more annoying than the spam the exercise was supposed to prevent. I explained that it was obvious thier explanation, stopping spam, did not hold H2O, because the solution was more annoying than the problem, therefore, it was obvious the real motive is, saving server capacity. I went on to explain that more server capacity is the answer to a lack of server capacity, because the alternative, now in force, is to restrict access, which prevents eyeballs meeting advertisements, which hurts the bottom line. The consequence of my going out of my way to help MSN correct its' foolish behavior is : I can no longer access my mail.

Ah, well.

I am considering wether to get another account, but wonder if I need one, as my work here seems to be done, in that all I could have said, I have, often several times, to no avail...

In any case, let all Men know by these presents that frosted.flake@hotmail.com has been repossessed by MSN, is no longer usable, any message sent there will be forever unread, and this event has contributed to the ennui at Frosted Flake Estates.

Just another sign of the times.

Losing your Hotmail account may not be such a bad thing. Besides knowing that the Gov may be monitoring our e-mail, what other privacy risks don't we know about?

Reviewing Old News:Secret U.S. court OKs electronic spying

In an unexpected and near-complete victory for law enforcement, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review overturned a lower court's decision and said that Attorney General John Ashcroft's request for new powers was reasonable.

The assault on civil liberties now appears to be a covert operation - a government and corporate partnership.

Be careful where you go and what you write: Hardwired Keystroke Loggers

Be careful what you say to your dog: Computer microphones spy on millions

And more recently, be aware of: MS Vista and NSA Collaboration

The U.S. agency best known for eavesdropping on telephone calls had a hand in the development of Microsoft,s Vista operating system, Microsoft confirmed Tuesday.
The National Security Agency (NSA) stepped in to help Microsoft develop a configuration of its next-generation operating system that would meet U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) requirements, said NSA spokesman Ken White.

With Vista expected to eventually power the majority of the world,s personal computers, it would be tempting for the government agency to push for a way to gain access to data on these systems, privacy advocates say.

Of course, the proponents of domestic spying say "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."
